  • Auxiliary fuel problem out of factory

We recently picked up a new 150 series GXL from Darwin.

Heading down to South Australia weeks later we had a fuel warning light (low fuel) at about 1000km. The fuel gauge was showing at least a third of a tank left, so after stopping and checking the rest of the car we had no other option but to keep going. About 100km later the car started to lose power, and cut out.

After some 'colourful' phone calls home to the dealership, and a visit from the roadside mechanic, the problem was identified.

As far as I understand (I don't have the manual with me now), the fuel pumps from the main tank and at a certain point the auxiliary pump will kick in to fill the main tank. (Happy to be corrected). We had fuel in the auxiliary tank, however couldn't get it to the engine.

Somewhere from the factory to Darwin, someone had not installed a fuse for the auxiliary pump in the fuse box. The problem was solved by taking out the wiper fuse and putting it in the auxiliary fuel pump fuse spot (i'll post a photo when I can).

The dealership since has been checking all vehicles with auxiliary fuel tanks for similar issues.

Hope this helps someone out there who has a similar experience to their new car!

Probably find it was taken by someone eg machanic and put into a customers car and they forgot to replace it. NOW I WOULD BE ASKING for my pre delivery money back. This pre delivery I have always classed it as a $1000 car wash, well that was back in 1989 when I was pre delivery manager for Toyota. I would be asking for either money back or free service or some thing for the stress and hassle. You may get a get lost type of attitude like I have experienced only recently or you may actually get some thing for the hassles.... Glad it was a quick n easy problem.... Bet you felt gutted for a few minutes..... Cheers Steve

I had a similar problem with my GU Patrol years ago. At 8 days old I came out to drive off in the morning to find the power steering fluid on the ground.

During pre-delivery, it seems that they had cleaned up the dripping fluid, but not bothered to check to find out that one of the washes had a manufacturing cavity in it, and the fluid was slowly forcing its way through until the washer failed. Cleaning up a drip is good, but why the hell would you not investigate that!

My dealer arranged the 10k service for free as a way of saying sorry. I'd be asking for the same...

This was a common problem when the 150 was released. The fact the technician new the cause indicates he has been there done that before! Cheers Leigh

""The fact the technician new the cause indicates he has been there done that before!"" Good Point Leigh........I'll take back my comment on the mechanic borrowing it BUT it still wasn't picked up in a pre delivery check. That's what we pay for, to check everything is ok even if it is fuse AND a known issue....Cheers Steve

As it turns out we did spend a night on the side of the Stuart Highway near Elliott. Lost about half a day waiting around for the solution. In the end the dealership threw in around $1000 of accessories which we wanted for free given the circumstances. So well done for the way it was eventually handled. Cheers for all your comments.
