Hi Guys and Girls. First post here but thought I'd share some info that I've just found on the 1KD engines.
For the past few months a mate has had a few lights come up on the dash of his 2009 prado intermittently, in which it enters limp mode and is pretty useless. He removes the negative terminal from the battery for 60 seconds and the fault usually goes away. The lights that show up are the flashing 4-LO light, the engine light, the VSC light and the ABS light. This was a random fault which used to clear upon a reset.
Yesterday it came up and this time wouldn't clear. Upon investigation we managed to pull a code of "34" out of the ECU which related to a few things (mainly boost pressure, solenoid problems or stepper motor problems). Un-plugged numerous of the sensors in relation to the intake pressure and various solenoids and stepper motors to no avail.
Lastly we removed the linkage between the turbo stepper motor to check how easy the motor actuated (which when the engine was started and stopped it was smooth without problems) and if we could manipulate the guide vane actuator. The actuator was stiff and extremely difficult to move. We reset the code and started the engine. The fault never appeared again on a test drive however it was noticeable that there was a performance issue as the turbo wouldn't spool like normal. It could still be driven at the speed limit now.
We've tried to move the guide vane actuator arm manually to loosen it up as I suspect its either carboned up or has something limiting its travel internally in the turbine housing to no avail. It does not return to its adjustable stop on the turbine housing so from my understanding we have 2 options.
1. Replace the turbo with new or second hand
2. Remove the turbo, disassemble it and see if it the carbon can't be cleaned up or the binding fixed.
Has anyone else seen or heard of this problem before, cleaned their turbo or replaced their turbo with aftermarket that may be able to assist in recognising a good brand relatively cheap? Cheers
