Thanks Maulbeagle for identifying the typo. What I should have said is the the caustic soda based degreasers are not good for paint work or aluminum alloys. (Draino consists mostly of caustic soda.) The hydrocarbon based products are more effective but more expensive.

I got one of these from Bunnings for my Karcher. Adjustable angle and variable pressure head. Great unit and not a bad price.

I mix it with water at the rate I find required depending on how bad it is & what I'm cleaning.
I think it's a bit strong I'm only guessing about 20% degreaser 80% water so 1:4, but take the instructions into account.
Once you get the hang of it you can make it as you like. I don't let it sit more than 30 seconds, don't let it dry.

It's OK to wash the motor but not a good idea to use a pressure washer. If you want to give it a good clean it get some CT18 Truck Wash, make up a solution as per the instructions & spray it all over the engine then leave it for 20-30 minutes or even longer depending on how dirty it is. Then just get a garden hose & wash it off. You can wash everything in the engine bay including the electrics & battery(s). Works really well.
This CT18 can also be used on the bodywork & underneath the car if you get it really dirty, if you've been through mud or been on the beach. Use a pressure washer to clean it off.

I have washed motors after trips in the rough, sand or after a service. I do not use a high pressure washer anymore though, after blowing an engine hose apart and away while cleaning a car before trying to sell it privately. Some rubbers and seals will not tolerate a high pressure gun wash.

Degreaser & hose. High pressure cleaners are not a good idea. With a hose you can wet anything down on the motor & anything attached such as an alternator no probs. Been cleaning engines that way for over 20yrs. It’s thorough & safe. I never wet a hot or even warm motor. Do it when it’s cold & leave the bonnet up for a few hrs after to let things including the belts dry a bit before starting.
