Turbo Siren Noise?

Hi everyone

Bought a second hand 2010 GXL diesel a couple of weeks ago and have realised there is quite a whine coming form the turbo. I have uploaded a video to youtube. Anyone who knows a 150 series around 2010, can you confirm this is normal sound or should I get this checked out? Vehicle has 96,000kms serviced every 5k with catch can and additional fuel filter fitted.

Sounds completely normal. If your really worried find another one to drive a compare with.

Thanks juz & krypto. Turbo whistle sounds normal, revving the engine at a complete stop sounds normal to me also. It's the whining sound you can hear that has me wondering. Then again, I could just be paranoid since I have only had it for 2 weeks. Anyone else?

Sounds normal... Unsure if you've owned diesels before but they do have their own disctinct sound- If you think the new ones sound rough go and drive a something with a 2H or 1HZ in it

Mine’s doing the same...2011 model with 150,000kms. Noise started after a long drive towing. My air filter was covered in dirt after a lot of off-road driving without changing it between services. Car went into limp mode and it’s been whirring abnormally ever since. I’ve had it looked at and short of a mechanic who was all too keen to change out my turbo, I haven’t figured out if it’s serious yet. It still drives fine at the moment...but turbo may be on its way out.

I'd be stopping driving pretty damn fast if there's something wrong with your turbo- A good way to turn a 2K job into a 10K job if you get little bits of turbo into your motor...

Hope you dont mind if i jump in on your thread. Just didnt want to duplicate.

I have a 2011 GX Prado auto d4d with 130K.

I have had a listen to your vid and note that your turbo whine does not sound nealry as loud as mine, and ive never had an exact same car to compare.

Anyone out there can tell me if my turbo whine is excessive?

Ahh makes me miss my old 1KD.
The 1GD doesnt have any turbo whine at all and I miss it!!

I know a few people have mentioned that is sounds normal to them although it does worry me when I read comments that their vehicle never used to make the noise. :/ I had a mechanic listen to the sound and they said it's probably nothing to worry about so i'm still left unsure of what to do if anything.

One thing that may be worth noting, when I got the car home I found the pipe that connects to the air filter box had not been tightened and i'm wondering if this lines up with the post above regarding the dirty air filter. It may be possible the intake sucked dirty air into the turbo causing some wear / damage? I"m only guessing. The vehicle has been used for towing too.

I also notice the sound is almost non existent when I first drive the car cold. As soon as it reaches operating temperature the noise reaches maximum volume.

To all 150 diesel 2009-2013ish owners. Do you have this noise on yours? Yes or no?

Just a quick update on this one. As the vehicle is still under a stat warranty, Toyota is replacing the turbo. I'll update this thread again once I find out the extent of the damage. Still driving the vehicle for now until the parts arrive.

Quick update regarding my turbo whistle/ whine....

Post #9 on this thread is a video of the noise my 2011 GX with 130kms Prado was displaying.

As you can see by the images, the excessive whisle was caused by damaged impellor blades.

Extended warranty was a lifesaver as the quote to replace exceeded $5,000.

The difference in the performance of the vehicle is like day and night.
