I would think the only way for them to get damaged would be if somethings hit them or if they've got a great gutfull of dust- Best way to check for sure would be to pull the pipe off I guess.

Obviously yes, but how would something get in there to hit the veins?

Bit of plastic Falls off, if it was near new Toyota could have left a surprise in there (10mm socket )

Another update. Turbo replaced, noise still there.

Anyone else got any ideas? I feel bad going back to Toyota again since they already replaced my turbo.

Hi Kizbot, the information you've passed on is great ! The whistle in your video is identical to mine, which only appeared at about 140K. The information I've been given from 2 diesel mechanics is the fins are likely to be as yours were, so if I don't like the noise save up and replace the turbo.

Would you say the noise is same now in volume and pitch as it was before the new turbo ?

Did Toyota mention if the turbo is effected in anyway by oil flow for lubrication ?

Our 2010 GXL developed a whine a couple of weeks ago at 200k. When we first noticed it, we were stuck in traffic and were looking around as we thought an emergency services vehicle was approaching. Took it to a mechanic who advises that turbo needs to be replaced and that we shouldn't drive the vehicle due to the possibility of the turbo failing and causing further damage. Am taking it to the local Toyota dealer tomorrow for a second opinion.

Heard the “siren noise” from a Prado at bunnings yesterday..... certainly doesn’t sound normal

Basically, I think it depends how audible the noise is. As you can hear from my video, mine wasn't too bad and I can say that after I had a brand new turbo fitted, the noise is less noticeable for sure but still present. If it's not screaming at you then I personally wouldn't worry about it. I have heard other prado's around my area with the same whine noise so it's got to be normal to some extent. Note, with my case the noise is only audible once the engine is nearing and has come to operating temp.
