  • B1501 - sub fuel sender open detected

    Hi everyone,

I did a routine check with Techstream and I was a bit surprised to find this error: B1501 - sub fuel sender open detected. Before I do anything, I wanted to ask if anyone can give me any pointers in how to sort it out. I did clear all the codes, but it returned right back, so it is clear that the malfunction is still present.

I should add my Prado is 150 TX, the first gen, with wheel under the body, and a single fuel tank, thus the "sub fuel" part is confusing, as I don't think I have a sub tank.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I thought I just updated the thread in case someone else ever goes through the same. I don't know if the issue is sorted out for good, but for now all is looking great. I remember reading somewhere that the fuel level is determined by the readings from two different ways, cable and CAN. When there is a difference between the readings, error B1501 is thrown. Other causes may be: harness or connector problems, combination meter malfunction or fuel sender malfunction.

Anyways, today I decided to simply unplug the combination meter and plug it back in. Upon rechecking for codes, there was nothing there anymore. I check 2 more times and still ok.

One other strange thing I noticed was that, before unplugging the combination meter, the fuel gauge showed less than 1/4 fuel. After plugging it back in, it showed less than 1/2! I'm not sure where the "confusion" was in the system, but I hope it is ok now.

thanks for posting an update , your issue had me stumped. The combimeter does have its own CAN controller so its possible that it had locked up , but i think removing the battery terminal would have also given it a reset.

You're right, removing the battery terminal would've been faster and easier. I guess I wanted to see what's in there and by default I try and avoid removing the terminals because I hate having to re-enter all the settings in my radio.
