  • 2.8D Engine temperature

I've noticed the 2.8D (newish vehicle 12k km) seems to take quite a long time to come up to temperature, particularly on these cold mornings. For example this morning with outside temp of around 2 deg it took about 4km before the gauge started to rise and then it only reached about 1/4 of the scale. Not until about 10km (and after a reasonably long hill), did the temp reach the normal halfway point of the scale. It then stayed there.

This is with semi -rural driving of about 80kmh and no stop/start. At first i thought the thermostat might be open but the temp does reach normal and then stays there, previous experience with other cars and faulty thermostats, saw the temp fluctuating depending on load, or not reaching normal at all. So i don't think it's the thermostat - it may very well be normal for this engine.

Are others seeing similar temperature rises?

Sounds right compared to mine. It then runs at 85-86 deg, except one hot day in the Simpson when it climbed all the way to 87 for a few minutes.Gauge sits right in the middle of the scale and doesn't move once it is up to temperature.

My engine runs around 87 to 88. Transmission box runs around 50 to 85, off-road can be around 100 to 110.

        cheers

It is how quickly the engine comes up to temperature that i was wondering about. The 2.8 seems to take much longer than any other vehicle I've owned to come up to normal temp from cold start.

Mine is the same, 9.1K Kms on the Odo. Stable coolant running temp is 86-87C.

It is taking 8-10Kms to get close to that in winter starting at 4-6C in the morning.

Normally it takes me 10 to 15 minutes these days. This is usual. If the engine is 4.5 v8 T, it will take less then 7 minutes. It all depends on the engine capacity. And of course the thermostat should be ok at first.

does seem a bit long to get up to temp but i wouldnt worry about it . I have an aftermarket digital temp guage fitted and once the engine is warm ive seen a variance from 72deg to 93 deg and the factory sensor all the while reads a stable 83deg. so it may even depend on where the sensor sits .

                Thanks all.

I suspect the slow temp rise is simply due to the last few mornings hovering around 1-2 degrees and the first 12km of my commute is flat road at about 80kmh, so very little load on the engine and a lot of very cold air blowing around.

Lucky my commute is 40km as sub 15km trips in winter the engine would never come up to temp
