  • Timing chain problems 2016 model 2.8 die

I have major problems with getting the timing chain replaced after a rattle noice was noticed after a service.
Was warned to have the timing chain replaced before my warranty expire in July.
i will put more detail about the whole ordeal later.
Apparently the real problem is now the balancing bar or something like that . Needs to be replaced and that part is only in Japan . Together with a timing chain replacement it seems to me that the whole engine is in jeopardy now.
The way it was explained about this part is that this balances the camshaft and pistons - i am lost now but it sound like a whole rebuild of the engine as it will need to be taken apart.
Could someone help me understand the seriousness of this repair? And what it entails.
Seems that hiluxes had this problem with the timing chain but mine seems to grow.

the timing chain issue is common across all body variants using the 1GD motor , and in multiple countries. There is no rhyme or reason , some are achieving high mileages with no issues and yet others are getting the noise , and therefore warranty replacements at around 30,000klm. The Prado motor is slightly different to Hilux and Fortuner as it uses a balance shaft to reduce vibrations , mounted below the crankshaft. I suspect , on Prados anyway that the quieter smoother engine and body environment seems to mask the issue a bit , delaying the inevitable.
so when the timing chain upgrade kit is installed there is a lot of work involved and a lot of parts which need to be ordered. My engine was rattly at under 30,000 and was off the road for 7 or 8 days while the engine was removed and all the parts replaced. Total cost claimed by the dealer was in the region of $6500!!! , half that was parts alone. they gave me a loan car so i wasnt carless.

i'll attach some diagrams so you can see the timing chain layout , if you have any questions i'll try to help.

Is it safe to assume that the new 2019 Prados are being manufactured with the upgraded timing chain kit such that this issue will not occur? If so, does anyone know after what year Toyota installed the new timing chains and fixed this issue?

That's a very different engine from the old 1-KD.
I had no idea they'd deleted the gear driven balance shafts mounted in the block, in favour of these chain driven shafts relocated to under the crank.
I can't see any worry free driving with this setup.

its only the Prado engine that uses the balance shafts , other variants dont have them

So a Hilux would have the same engine but just missing the balance shaft assembly?

                  yes thats correct.

In other countries the Innova people mover also has the 1GD.

I wonder how many owners know that the GD is not just a KD with timing chain instead of the belt.
I'm guessing most would be like me and have no clue?

                          Thanks Nudgebar.Very Good info.
Was wondering about making Toyota replacing the engine because it seems a big job.

Can I trust this car now after this ? I don't know. I bought it with the view to tour around Australia with the caravan next year. So, am i going to have a good feeling doing that ? = I don't know, i feel uneasy now.

I will post more after this saga is finished .

You're at the mercy of the Toyota workshop. No doubt they will guarantee their work.
If your noise was the actual balance shafts or their bearings, the concern would be bearing material having circulated through the engine.
It's an engine out job to do anything on the bottom end of these engines.
If it was just a balance shaft chain or tensioner problem, would not need engine out so it does look like yours was more serious.

I know what you mean about the trust issue - the very day after the chains were replaced i noticed a heater hose leaking , so i took it back. Then about 2 weeks later the adjacent heater hose split open about 5k from home , so back it goes on a tow truck for another hose. Hoses were not in the country so had to be express shipped from Japan. sucks really
