July 2019 from memory. To be honest, I have only done 7000kms since i bought it so probably not the best to compare since it is still fairly new.

is the noise present when driving up a hill or just on idle?

1GD's have a known fault with timing chain set.

Fortuners and Hilux are getting full timing chain set replacement under warranty, big job, many $$ if you had to pay. It was yet another thing that put me off the 2.8 based cars and turbo diesel in general.

Prado's seem less affected due to the inclusion of a balance shaft to make the motor smoother, and thus different timing set, but they are not immune to it.

Failures cause big issues so be assertive with Toyota about knowing this issue exists and putting your concerns in writing to them so you can go back to it if they insist it is not the issue then it fails.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. Just an update. The car has been with Toyota for the past week for analysis. They have so far said they will be removing the engine this week to remove timing covers etc. to find the issue, their hunch is either timing chain or balance shafts but unknown for sure until its opened up. They have said that they will either open up and repair the current engine or the service manager is pushing for a engine replacement for them to keep the engine for further analysis as this is a first off case apparently.

Yep, hence the $$ I mentioned as a timing set swap is an engine out affair.

Either way, sounds like they are going to look after you and consensus seems to be that once the new timing set goes in there's no further issues as the new set is a redesign.

I'm in two minds about what I'd want the outcome to be. A new engine would be great if it's a full crate motor and is complete top to bottom, but if it's just say, a long block, I wouldn't want them removing and reattaching everything on such a low k's motor, more chance to stuff it up. You'll have paperwork either way so resale shouldn't be affected,

          Fingers crossed for you.

They have just confirmed they want to do a engine swap. New engine Valve cover to sump. I suppose its better than taking the motor appart to fix it but im still not overly confident they can put everything back together as it was in a near new car.

Also the engine number appears in all the service paperwork receipts etc, although it shouldn't affect resale value in the future evidence of a engine swap may turn potential buyers off and actually affect resale value.

Not really sure i have any better options.

well , maybe - Call or email the Guest Experience Centre and outline what you have gone through so far. The reason is that head office does NOT have access to the database which the dealers use for service and repair operations on customers cars. At least then you have a permanent record of what happened to the car in future and if anything else goes wrong with it down the track. Maybe ask them for an extended warranty . Under consumer law an engine replacement is classified as a Major failure , and the car maker has to rectify or replace.

So new long block then, fuel system, manifolds, turbo etc all to be re-used?

That's a fair body of work and was what I meant when talking concerns for a swap.

When you pull an an engine to do a timing set swap the whole thing comes out, all manifolds and fuel system attached, bar the supply lines obviously. Then it all goes back in complete.

With a long block swap they will strip all the looms, manifolds, turbo, fuel system etc and put them on the new block.

It's all the little things, clips, mounting brackets, gaskets etc that are at risk.

I would also be putting my hand up for an extended warranty as that will give you/the new owner (if you plan to sell within warranty oeriod?) piece of mind.

I do like that they are giving you a complete new engine though, no worry about bearings failing prematurely due to bad harmonics from the failed timing chain set etc. Plus you get a complete brand new head/valve train, no carbon etc.

Easy to focus on the downsides, but I should try and keep the upside in mind too

Ended up getting the engine swapped for a new one and the new engine sounds really good. Picked up the vehicle a couple of weeks ago and bought it home and was i in for a shock when i looked at the engine bay. Hoses not secured properly, engine oil overfilled, cable clips damaged, electrical tape damaged, hose stopper clamp tool left on transmission line so there was no flow to/from the cooler, damage and scratches over firewall insulation, sump damaged, fuel line not clipped into place. that what i could see just by a quick visual inspection, who knows what else has been missed. They have ended up rectifying some of the stuff i have i identified that was easily rectified other things that do not affect the function of the vehicle were not considered as damage and are things Toyota expect to happen during a engine swap. Its been a bit of a shit fight the past couple of weeks as Toyota consider this case closed but i do not agree.

Yep. I have been dealing with the dealer and guest experience center but its just been hand balling back and forward between the 2. As far as guest experience centre is concerned my case is closed as my original issue has been resolved, The vehicle is of acceptable quality, The vehicle matches the description provided by Toyota., The vehicle is fit for purpose made known by Toyota and they do not want to talk about it at all. Right now the dealer wants to lift and remove the entire vehicle body to replace the firewall insulation that was damage. I have submitted a formal complaint requesting a replacement vehicle, we'll see how that pans out. By far the worst new vehicle experience which is disappointing.

Thats exactly what i was alluding to - without actually alluding it lol... I was asked nicely not to say anything , and only a couple of members here know me personally , but my car is being replaced as we speak , i'm picking up the new one tomorrow. Over a dozen faults including 2 major failures and numerous minor ones , two tow truck rides and i had had enough. I had also been burnt earlier in my life by a 1KD with a cracked piston , so this time i was taking no chances. I was offered a replacement or a refund , and i took the first option. I still stand by Toyota though i hate anything Ford and Holden.

Yep, this is exactly what I was talking about when I noted my concern for swaps.

It's effectively impossible to do an engine swap and not break/mark/damage other things unless you are being ultra cautious which is not going to happen when it's being done on the clock.

I'd also be pushing for a replacement if there's any possibility of that happening, all of these little things will affect your resale later also.

I did, it took a bit of persistence but eventually they came to the party. Im waiting for a final close out of the case within the next couple of weeks along as there is no delays due to the corona.
