  • EGR Clean 1GD / 2.8L

I am interested to hear experiences on inspecting / cleaning a 1GD EGR system. I have seen plenty written about EGR clean for 1KD but can't find anything on 1GD. I have a 2015 1GD with 106K and a catch can so am expecting it is probably due a clean?

    Cheers SMP

Theres a few good write-ups regarding egr cleaning on the fortuna forum. From little information i have read, its isnt as hard to remove the egr compared to the 1kd.

Thanks for the link above, it almost seems too good to be true and would be interesting to hear from somebody who has fitted one. May need to connect Techstream to check that it does keep shut! Perhaps people have them and are reluctant do discuss as only legal for off road use?

Even if peope are using it for “off road” use only, any information would be good. Hahah. What software would be required to check if the egr is kept close? I wasnt sure if my obd2 app that shows egr% would change because if it does go to 0% all the time, that is what the ecu is reading and it would surely display an engine error code.

Techstream shows the EGR opening, at least from memory and I am not with the Prado to check. I would think that any app like torque pro would show the same if the pids are known or can be worked out from Techstream. I assumed that part of the plug in unit's job is not only to keep the valve shut but also to inhibit codes. We know that the blanking plates have a 7mm (again from memory) hole in to prevent codes, so something would be necessary to prevent faults with the valve completely shut.

Does anyone have any further info on this, I am keen to fit one to a brand new vehicle, it appeals to me that you can pop it off when you take it for a service.

Well, haven't posted on this forum for some time but I thought I would respond to this given the lack of any other replies.

I fitted this device to my 2018 Prado 2.8ltr VX Limited (basically a Kakadu without the extra fuel tank) about six months ago but didn't actually connect it up until the warranty expired back in February. Fitting it was easy except for the connection to the EGR plug which is difficult because you can't see it and it's difficult to access, but basically it's at the rear of the engine and you need to get your hand into the cramped space go 'feel' the plug and disconnect it and then reconnect to the relevant AOB plug. A mechanic mate showed me the easier way to do it, just take off the engine cover, remove the small engine cover support member, climb on the engine such that you can reach down the back of the engine to remove the EGR plug (bit stiff) and connect that plug to the AOB harness.

An initial start-up no drama whatsoever, no error codes and smooth sweet idling. Have now done 3000Km with it connected including some long runs through mountains here in NZ, and I have to say I am very impressed. Engine seems to run noticeably smoother, gear changes smoother and engine more responsive. I usually drive it in the first of the 'S' modes, (not sure all Prados have those mode switches behind the gear shifter) and I have to say the performance and engine responsiveness just felt so much better. Fuel consumption seemed to be much the same, but I'll get a better handle on that next week when I go away for a month with the 2 tonne caravan in tow, now that we are out of lockdown.

So bottom line, .....my opinion is it's well worth the money, and I expect that the EGR valve will stay a lot cleaner.

Hi Guys, I fitted the Air on Board EGR delete and found it great. The engine runs smoother and has more go. Would recommend it and much easier than fitting a EGR blank or restriction plate.

Any more updates and long term opinions on the AOB EGR Device?

Anyone try AOB with updated 150 KW engine? The website says does not fit. I do not know why.
