  • T-Belt Maintenance warning on dash.

I was greeted with a “T-Belt maintenance” warning as I hoped into my 150 series Prado this morning. It has 164,000 on the clock and is a 2013 model.

What is this gonna cost me? The car needs a service as well so might as well get them both done. I am tossing up weather or not to take it to our local trusted Toyota mechanic or take it to the Toyota dealership.

what are your opinions on this??

KZ and KD’s timing belt must be the easiest ever.

Might be worthwhile to change the coolant pump as well..all up I'd think around $600-$700..plus service

I have a 2013 Prado as well but with only 83,000km. It was due for this service at my Toyota dealership last July based on time for the timing belt rather than the mileage unlike your car (which also included replacing the fuel pump in the auxiliary petrol tank)
I declined both at this stage. I asked about the cost to do the belt only at a later date and was quoted $440. I have also read on here that the fuel pump rarely fails -so I will replace when fails.
I would be interested to know what you or others think about when I should replace the belt considering I am exceeding the time frame but have only done half the mileage. To me it is more the mileage than time??

A belt is made from materials that progressively age and perish. I have had a perfectly new looking tyre catastrophically fail at 6 years due to age. The question for you is, is it worth rolling the dice on a belt failure and are you willing to live with the consequences.

I agree krypto. About 5-years would be my suggestion if the mileage doesn’t come around first.
It’s such a cheap and simple job to do, even from Ultratune etc.
Plus you don’t have to replace the water pump, especially with such low miles on the clock.
The in tank fuel pump is a bit like the piston woes. Some cars go forever on the original pump, others fail for no particular reason. You will get warning with the pump though, she’ll cut out at 1/4 tank and be very slow to fill to 100%.

I've heard replacing the water pump is advised if you have a one piece pump (replace with the newer 2 piece version) while you have everything apart which makes future water pump replacements much easier to perform.
