  • Turbo whine when cold

The 1KD-FTV engine and turbo in my Prado were replaced late last year after I cracked a piston. It's a new crate engine and new turbo. All was good for the first 1000km or so.

After about 1500km the engine developed a whistle/whine when cold/warm. It occurs at about 2000 rpm when the engine hasn't fully warmed up. (I don't thrash it, but it does take a while to warm up). The sound goes away once everything is fully warmed up according to my Scan Gauge.

The sound is a high-pitched whine that sounds a bit like a flute or wind noise coincides with the turbo boost spooling up at around 2000 rpm.

Any thoughts on what might cause this?

Sounds like either inlet or exhaust manifold needs re-tightening (or something in the inlet path).

As posted sounds like a boost leak. Normal practice after a engine rebuild/refit is after a 1000 - 1500 kms to run a spanner over the various nuts and bolts to ensure none have become loose after the initial heat soaks & vibrations. This sounds very much like what has happened in your case.

So after 5 days in with Toyota, I rang them today and apparently fault with the turbo. They were a bit vague on the fault, however it is going to be replaced. They said the impeller is 'scoping'. Anybody know what that means?

Interestingly to get a warranty on the new engine I had to replace the Turbo as well which was an additional $3500.

Hopefully this solves the problem. On the plus side they've been very good about it and given me a loan car while we wait for a turbo from Japan.

krypto hi, I’m wondering if the noise you describe almost sound like an owl - hooooooo! Hooooooooo! .?? I’m getting this sound on acceleration, and after reading this will take note of the rpm when it next happens. Doesn’t seem to matter if the engine is warm or cold.

I took it back to my mechanics as they had done a full fluid/oil change all over and catch can install prior to me picking it back up. At first they thought it was an air leak and replaced all my clamps after one was a bit rusty just to be sure, but it kept going. They then ran some tests, full smoke test, boost, dunk etc and said it was fine, just the turbo. Having no experience with turbo diesels prior, I’m none the wiser. It was particularly loudest going up a really big hill/mount on incline, so accelerating under standard car load only, but steep gradient.

I’m curious how your changeover of the turbo went, and did it resolve the sound. Particularly if it is a similar sound.
