  • Long range fuel tank issues?

    G’day all,

New to the site so apologies if this has already been covered before.

Have a 150 2014 Prado with long range tanks. Got it second hand in 2018. Over the last year when I completely fill it the expected km on the screen says 1250, thought it used to say around 1450. Anyone else had this? Said it to garage who shrugged their shoulders and did nothing.

    thoughts?

Pretty much normal. When the low fuel light comes on there is about 20 litres left and you will rarely put more than 130 l in. Mine always says around 1200- 1250 km at that point but will do 1400km+.

Is that long range tanks (considered standard prado tanks) of 150 litres? or the aftermarket tank by LRA that brings it to 220L? If its the standard tank then 404pug is correct. Mine never shows anything above 1200ish km.
If you have the LRA tank then unfortunately its still normal to display 1200km ish. This is due to the Toyota programming in the system. I had a LRA tank in my old prado (2010 150). There is no easy way around it. Best is probably a scangauge/ultragauge to track fuel.

        I have a MY2016 GX with the standard 150 Litre tank/s.

I've found that the expected range for full tanks is dependent on how much heavy towing I've done recently. If I've been doing a lot of towing (of our 2,000kg camper-trailer), the car predicts around 1,200km range. If I haven't been towing for a few months, it predicts a range of over 1,400km. I've come to the conclusion that it predicts the range of a full tank on recent consumption rates.

Does a Scangauge II accurately track fuel? I recently installed one, but despite carefully following the instructions at each refill it still underestimates fuel consumption. I think it gets closer after each fill. Is this normal? Will it eventually converge on something close to accurate?

What you are experiencing is totally normal.

I think that you will find the maximum range changes over time based on the long term average fuel consumption.

My understanding is that if you disconnect the battery for about a 1/2hour the figure will be reset to the 1450km.

I replaced factory one with long range tank, 130L - but still shows original DTE 650k, apparently due to closed firmware or something. I just have to track my many K done via trip meter .
