  • Supercharging an older engine

    Hey all,
Looking at supercharging my 120 prado. Only question is 250,000 too many k's to consider supercharging it? Ive spent too much on it to consider upgrading but really want the extra torque that only a charger will give.
please say it's a good idea even if it's not
anyone put one on an engine with high k's?

Hard to say without knowing the history and condition of the engine & driveline in question, I supercharged my 90 series but at 140,000 km. If you do I would keep boost to 6 or 7 psi at most on stock internals. The 3.4L was/is bullet proof and while the 4.0 is good I have not heard much of how they handle boost.

Yeah ok thanks. I'm getting a compression test done on the engine today which may sway my decision. Mechanic seems to think the rotrex supercharger is the way to go. It's a centrifugal one so the boost increases with the revs. They're made specifically for it but haven't heard anything from anyone who's had one good or bad? I know the engines are very reliable but question how a charger will affect engine life. Anyone had or have a rotrex?

Compression test came back good. 180psi. Still got plenty of life left in the engine.
Hey Leethal what charger did you put on your 90 series? I'm wondering if towing would hurt or affect a centrifical charger that the rotrex is. Not sure if being under load makes them work harder or just the engine itself. Not real knowledgeable with mechanics and physics unfortunately.

The FJ Cruiser guys who went for Rotrex centrifugals hated them- no bottom end power, no good.
I would be going for a twin screw TRD unit

Yeah right, I was thinking they're basically just good for racing in hi revs, not what I'm after. Want to increase torque for towing. Still debating if it's worth the risk on engine life to supercharge at all given the k's but my head says just do it stuff the risk lol. Unichip sounds like it'll give some improvement but not huge gains but a way cheaper investment...

My head won the battle. Just ordered a magnuson intercooled supercharger kit. A tad excited hope it was the right decision. I've never said to myself though, "I wish I had less power,"

What are you options with getting insurance once the supercharger has been installed?

haha yeah about that.... To be honest I haven't actually looked into it yet. Probably a good idea to soon though I guess. Either way it's on its way!

The superchargers for the 90 series were Roots type which which give the torque increase from straight away at low revs.

I was under the impression that the superchargers for the 120 and 150's for the 4.0L V6, were all centrifugal. Which is a damn shame. They act more like a turbo, only get the boost at higher revs.

you are correct that they only get boost at higher revs, however they don’t act like a turbo at all. Turbos can get boost as soon as they spool, which can be from 1500rpm depending on a few factors. Rotrex blowers are physically tied to engine speed so maximum boost is only attainable at redline.
so not ideal for towing unless you want to run it to redline all the time
