  • Is the Extended Warranty worth the $$$

My 2015 Prado is just about out of warranty and Toyota has send out the Extended Warranty leaflet. I'm in two minds about paying the $1155 for the extra 3 years warranty. The peace of mind would be good but am just worried I'm flushing my hard earned down the toilet. Has anyone bought the extra warranty and do you think its worth the $$$$?

I've had it before and it was well worth it when I was presented with over $7k of warranty covered bills for various repairs that the extended warranty covered. I've just bought another vehicle and also bought the extended warranty.

It's worth it - I'll likely be getting it.

f you intend to keep it - then it means 5.5 years of driving before you get one of those 'before warranty expires' kind of inspections done (so will likely show up a lot more) or, if you intend to sell it (and it's a Gen Toyota one) then it's transferable and would be peace of mind for a new buyer.

From memory though the Toyota one has a Km limit? up to only 60,000km's for another 3 years? That's 16 months for me - and so that's my only doubt about it...

        3 years >150,000 kms.

Hmmm - they may need to educate their staff then! I was told when I bought the car that the extra kilometres included the original 100,000km's, and so you could buy the additional 3 years, but only add the 60,000km's to the end. So it'd end up being a 6-year, 160,000km.

Unless that's what you mean? the 150,000 is 150K in total on the car? In which case it'd be worse here - that's only 3 years and an additional 50,000km. Fine for most I guess - the average is 15,000km/year I read somewhere, so I guess that covers the slightly above average driver. Shame, as that 50,000km is only just over a years worth of driving for some.

Either way, no doubt it'll change again in a years time when I consider it. But back to the OP - I've always purchased it (the genuine manufacturer extended warranty) on my cars and it's been a hit to the wallet for a month or two, but peace of mind for three years.

I don't think I'll need up to 150,000 km's as we have only done 43000 km's so far (3 Years) and couldn't imagine going over 100,000 within 3 more years.

Piggy did you have any issues trying to get your car fixed under the extended warranty? I've read that you could get a fair bit of a run around getting things fixed.

Does the extended warranty have restrictions on servicing? I ask as you may have read in my capped service thread that my Prado had it's 5th capped service today, on the invoice was printed in bold lettering: Next service due at 60,000Kms or 7th Dec whichever comes first.
This leaves me in the crazy situation that presumably Toyota would be happy for me to cover another 30,000 Kms before the next oil change (I have done less than 30,000) yet would penalise me if I didn't have the next service carried out before 7th Dec despite the car not being used at all as it is up on axle stands for 7 months while I am in the UK.
If this rule still applies it would be enough to discourage me from taking out the extended warranty although I can see that it may be useful given the reported problems with the DPF etc.

                  Very interesting JohnLynn.

I don't know about restrictions but I was told that the car needs to be serviced to the log book requirements and didn't need to be serviced by Toyota as long as it was done by a qualified mechanic. I would still get it serviced at Toyota for piece of mind and to cover any thing that could be used against me.

As I am waiting to take delivery of a new 2018 VX, I asked the dealer this morning to clarify. The extended warranty covers 6 years OR 150,000 klms - whichever occurs first.

                      Thanks Tubs_79

I didn't know about extended warranty, I'm disappointed my dealer never mentioned this, anyway I called this morning after seeing this post
turns out my 2015 GXL ran out of Warranty yesterday, rego'd 19/3 but took delivery 21/3/15 (thought I had a day up my sleeve)
luckily my dealer (Maitland) contacted Toyota Aust and they said they would still honour it. I've done 59k and now have another 3 years up to 150k Factory Extended Warranty for $1285
I can have it serviced by any licenced motor repairer with no cap on repairs with Toyota, a nice peace of mind, cheers again, Dave

Wow I would have thought to retain the extended warranty, Toyota would had have stipulated all services must be carried out by them. Good to know that’s not th3 case.

But do you need to have a service every six months even if you have done zero Kms as in my case for 7 months of the year.

JohnLynn I would say so as that's what is needed in the log book to keep the warranty.

I bit the bullet and got the extended warranty today. Piece of mind for the next 3 years.
