  • 2nd battery tray for 2019/20 Prado

Hi folks. I just bought a Prado VX. I removed the Sidewinder battery tray (2nd) from my 2012 Prado. The base underneath to sit the tray on has changed over time. There are no threaded holes to bolt it on to and due to the design of the base. In addition there is no way you can get a spanner underneath the base to tighten nuts. Can anyone suggest a battery tray and method of fitting? I do not want to drill holes in the tray base right now.

i just used a Ironman battery tray and the battery hold downs hook directly to the guard as per the starting battery installation. The plastic bushes for the hold downs are readily available from Toyota.
The reason I used the Ironman tray was its length and design allowed me to modify it slightly to take a Optima D31a battery. Virtually any battery tray will fit as you are only providing a flat surface for the battery to sit on.

Thanks. This means the battery and tray is only held down by the two hooked posts rather than hooking the posts onto the tray as intended, with the battery tray tray bolted to the car. I guess that should work just fine. Seems to be no other option.

Hooked posts barely reach high enough to put restraint bar over the tall battery. Had to put it on without tray. When it shoots through the front of the car to take out a pedestrian I will rethink the setup. Next battery I might buy a lower and longer one.

Not a lot of difference between securing the battery hold downs to a bolted down tray versus to the body of the Prado, to my mind the limiting factor is the hold down itself. The OEM system is to the body and I would hazard a guess the drivers side mount is probably used in Europe and other cold climates to secure a second battery so unless there is a major increase in battery weight it should be suffice.

Have you tried to get a longer heavier hold down posts, that would allow fitment of your tray.

Thanks Lee. I think they might be just long enough and firm enough hold the battery but might need occasional checking in case it slides around. I wanted them longer to house a bc2dc charger on battery but will need to find another spot in engine bay. Tomorrow ARB Summit Bar, Safari snorkel and air bags in rear coils. Next is GME aerial and UHF, Anderson plug for Kamper trailer charging, rip out 3rd row seats and install my Drifter drawer kit. Busy!

I might look out for the Ironman tray.

I have a TJM tray in My 2016. Fits perfectly and best of all it has a top support to better support the battery. A 105 ah battery fits.ñ
