  • Techstream - Possible Cable Issue?

    Hi all,

Have Techstream loaded up on my old workshop laptop running XP. Never connects to the web.
It was setup to run the Volvo VIDA software and I still have a DiCE OBD2 cable from when I had a Volvo V70R wagon.
I plugged it all into the Prado (2015 GDJ150 GXL), got it working ok and did a health check to see if its communicating properly. (so far so good)
Went over to customize to adjust a few things and no bueno... click on "warnings" or any of the other topics get a tiny blink of a pop up for a half second and then nothing.

This is the cable i have.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/2014D-Vida-...EAAOSw8uFcficS

Do i just need to bite the bullet and buy the J2534 one?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Suitable...e/231769614861

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I am far from being an expert on Techstream but I doubt it will ever work with a Volvo lead. Have a search on here for the best lead as many will only do the basics and are in effect useless. The one in your link claims to be "the latest" but it shows the firmware as 1.4.1 I cant remember or check as I am not in Australia but I am not sure that it is the one you need.
I think mine came from Hong Kong or somewhere, it should be on this forum if you search. It was my second attempt at buying a lead so I learnt the hard way.
A good source of information about Techstream is from a forum called car technology dot co dot uk (which seems down at the moment) they usually have the most up to date release of Techstream plus other helpful information. You can use it on windows 10 64 bit. Don't expect too much from whatever system you use though as unless you buy a proper lead the drivers make the program very unstable with the knock off leads.
Please post what you end up going for and how well it works.

Yeah you need the J2534 cable, I have one I bought from ebay prob 7 or 8 years ago and it's the same version that is on ebay now. Mine works fine, I have customised a mate's KDJ150 (I have a KZJ120). I run it on a windows 10 laptop but in a VM running XP

Thanks. All my searching on here doesn't seem to show much in the way of what to buy. Ebay os full of options and I'm sure many of them arent the ones I need.
I have techstream version v12.00.127 on my laptop. Its a dedicated device for for OBD2 usage running windows XP
Happy to buy another cable if thats what I need.

I'll do the cable test and see if its showing anything. Could somebody share what cable they bought? and a cable test?

Their V13 software was crap, worked fine with the V12 software though.

Looks like No 5 isn't communicating properly. Among other things.

It is weird that I can read all the other functions ok. (see below)

This is mine on M-OBD ('04 KZJ120 not OBD2) - runs on K line not CAN
You need to get one of the cables from ebay, Mine is visually the same as this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-L...MAAOSwu1deZtwN and the ones that state the FW are running the same FW as my cable I bought years ago.

Yes that is the one, if you search for techstream lead with 2.0.4 firmware there are plenty of results.

Edit. The forum I mentioned in post #2 is back on line and the last update of the program was back in February to V15.00.026, also the driver for X64.
You would have to join to get your version activated but well worth it if you want the latest available.

So I’ve got v13.00.022 up and running with the supplied MINI VCI cable now.
but have stumbled across this problem.
it’ll do the check cable ok. But won’t “connect to vehicle”.

I don't have techstream loaded on anything so I cant try it to help but your problem sounds like a driver issue as most problems are.
Have you directed the program to use X-horse or whatever driver you are using? again sorry I cant remember how you do this but fairly straightforward from the menu.
Have you got a version 2.0.4 lead? as the 1.4.1 will not do what you need even if it does connect
Did you look at the forum I suggested as there is a little program downloadable that lets you easily switch between all of the known drivers.

Hi John, what are the limitations of the 1.4.1 lead? I have one and it works ok on my 2010 Prado.
Can you successfully upgrade the firmware from 1.4.1 to 2.0.4?

Got it all working with a variation of the older 12.00.127, xhorse drivers. A bit of trial and error with copy and paste into some 86x folders and presto. Working with the mini VCI.
Door window functions enabled. Just gotta find the door chime one now.

                          cheers all

I wish that I could remember exactly what the issue with the older lead is, as explained I am not near either a Toyota or a laptop with techstream on to check. I think it will not open data pages so is hardly any use at all. Edit, I am pretty sure it is called the data list that can't be read. Could someone please try this to confirm?

SBAus glad you have it working, you still haven't said which lead you have and I think you will be frustrated if you are attempting to stop the door chime as although you can stop the seat belt audible warning you cant stop the irritating door chime!

You are correct John. My 1.4 lead reads all data on a 1KD, but not on the 1GD. Needs later 2.0.4 as you say. The 1.4 on 1GD reads most other modules and allows some changes.
