    Any issues foreseen with a new Prado 150- D4D as the tow vehicle for a hybrid van up to 2.5T ATM? Intending in future years to revisit places like PDR, Plenty Highway, Strezlecki Track, Meerenie Loop, GRR etc towing a hybrid van up to 2.5T max ATM.
    Over the past 18 years I have been driving Pajeros (with airbags) for 750,000km, occasionally towing a 1.6T Kimberley Kamper. Looking to replace the Paj and KK in the next 12 months. Other consideration is a Ford Ranger; I really don't want something as big as a LC200. With Pajeros are no longer, a Prado looks the logical choice.
    I understand the Prado is legal to 3Tonnes, but what's practical on Highway 1 and what's sensible on ordinary dirt highways may be different things.
    I have tried the search function and couldn't find anything

    Hi Mark,

    Are you referring to the August updated Prado which has had power and torque outputs bumped up slightly? (150 kW / 500 Nm)

    The power increase would definitely be welcome in the Prado, as the existing engine can only be described as "adequate" for towing. But I think it's a lot to ask from the motor to tow 2.5 Tonnes.

    I currently have a 200 Series and my caravan is less than 2.5 T. That's about as much as I'd like to tow with this motor. The Prado could tow that much but you might find your foot pinned flat to the floor to keep up with the traffic when going up some moderately long steep hills on the highway. However, for where you are planning on going, the dirt highways will be fairly flat, so the Prado should be able to do it with reasonable ease, albeit at a leisurely pace. And since there's much less traffic to deal with, you can set your own pace.

    Just don't expect much in the way of overtaking performance on the bitumen though. The Prado may have more grunt than a Pajero DiD, but this will be largely negated by the larger van that you're planning to buy.

        Yep, the test driver nailed it. OK as a car only but once you’re towing, speed drops off.
        That may not be a problem once out on country roads, everyone is more considerate, overtaking vehicles can see further and get by safely.
        On the Gibb etc, your road speed will be lower again. Some of the jump ups will have you digging in the box but nothing it can’t handle.
        That video shows how rubbish the Toyota transmission computer is without a lock up kit, revs flaring as it tries to select an impossible gear.
        My tweaked KD makes similar or a tad more hp and torque than this soon to be released upgraded GD and still, not enough power to tow at highway speeds on that Sydney expressway, it’s a tough bit of highway.
        There’s no question, if you want to tow comfortably and maintain highway speeds, you need a 200.....but again, with a lock up kit.

          I would swap out to a 200 series. Much better tow rig, and IMO easier to drive than a Prado.

            I reckon Prado is best suited for up to 2200kgs. The challenge is finding a Caravan that doesn't need to go and visit Jenny Craig.
            They're out there, but aren't cheap due to the premium construction methods, that aren't just a cladded simple wooden box on a very heavy chassis.
