  • Front left squeak

Hey guys. I have a small but persistent squeak that I’m trying to identify the source of.

theres a squeak somewhere in the front left of the car that only begins after longish drivers (1 hr or so) and while the car is moving (suspension/brakes don’t seem to be related)

    any ideas or similar experiences?

I've got a similar thing sometimes, also from the front left on my 2018 Prado GX. Although, I would describe it as a continuous squeal. Braking or accelerating usually stops the squeal. I figured that it is a small stone or dirt in the brakes (between the rotor and dust shield?). It usually goes away after a while. I've tried reversing to try and dislodge the stones/dirt, and I think that has worked. I guess taking off the wheel and inspecting/cleaning could help too.

Could it be the seal in the exhaust join around that area? There are discussions on this in other threads.

I had my head under there the other day and didn't notice anything - but not exactly sure what im looking for. It's definitely possible though, only present (or more prevalent) at low revs and once the engine warms up, doesn't seem to be braking/suspension related. The only thing that doesn't support this would be the left hand side origin? The exhaust runs under the drivers seat.

The other factor that goes against the exhaust is I have an aftermarket redback exhaust fitted.

As an update - squeak seems to be a flat spot on the inside of the handbrake drum. Haven't had it fixed to confrim yet but nothing else seems to make sense

I started a tread about this the other as I'm having a similar issue. So far we've tried lubricating the propeller shaft, checking handbrake/brakes, replacing the DPF, changing a guard on my rear suspension that they thought was rubbing. At one point they thought it was just dirty brakes so cleaned also. Nothing did the trick.

Car was back in Toyota today. Now they think it is the front left brake again. Something heating up, expanding and rubbing. Which is why its worse on hot days/summer and inconsistent. They have been able to replicate the issue with a lot of hard breaking. Prado goes back to Toyota next week and they are going to machine the brakes and see if that fixes it.

Not sure if it's the same thing. Mine starts once the car is hot and on 4WD tracks, like a little mouse from under the car. I thought it was exhaust related.

So according to Toyota my brakes were glazed. Apparently from excessive heavy braking. They machined them and haven't been able to replicate the noise. So I'll keep an eye on it and fingers crossed.

Got a week an a half of peace but the noise came back today. Exact same. So can't have had anything to do with galzed brakes. Will speak with Toyota again on Monday.

Solved... mine turned out to be a gasket in the exhaust. Well known problem apparently. Squeak that appears once things warm up

Spoke with a mechanic today who said it was common on the 3.0 but with the 2.8 they changed the set up and it's not a known issue on them. Back to the drawing board for me.

Someone else in the car thought the squeak might be coming from the rear wheel, so had the mechanic pull the rear brake apart and found the handbrake drum full of mud and clay. replace the disk/drum (needed doing as it turned out), and the handbrake shoes and it SEEMS to have fixed it - haven't had a properly warm day since to test it out.
