  • SOLVED::: Need help (High pitched noise) From Gearbox area

Hey guys. Just joined and hoping I can tap into the wisdom of the group. I have searched and spent hours looking but can’t find an answer. I have just purchased a 2019 vx with 40k on the dial in immaculate condition. Very happy other than this high pitched noise similar to a break indicator squeal. The car is perfect until it warms up, it usually takes about 30 - 40 min at 100 + Kph and starts with a chirp chirp chirp followed by a loud squeal. It only happens on acceleration and goes as soon as you come off the gas. I have already discounted the Radio, Aircon, brakes, CV joints, Exhaust coupling (under drivers door),
The sound seems to be coming from under the middle of the car at the point of the transfer case? I went for a tech drive with the Toyota technician today ( a young lad 1st year) the sons came on on cue and the tech confirmed the noise. The car is still under manufacture warranty and my Toyota dealer (who I just purchased the car from) are committed to rectify the problem. I just have the feeling that this may go on for some time going to and from the dealer before it’s sorted. They checked all the brakes because the young lad (Toyota tech) relayed it had a sound similar to a brake indicator. I will appreciate Any help pointing me in the right direction.

I have a similar sounding issue with mine. Spent over 15months back and forth with Toyota trying to figure it out and eventually gave up on them as they were getting nowhere and I was going crazy dealing with them.

    Do you do much off-roading?

My new mechanic has seen something similar before and his leading theory is its dust/dirt getting into the seals under the car (theres about five of them from the transfer case across to the wheels). He sprayed them with a silicon spray and its seems to mostly have been ok since. He said to park over a sprinkler for 30 mins after each off-road adventure and keep and eye on it and so far so good. Might be something for you to try.

Hi. thanks for the reply. i have only had the vehicle 2 weeks and i don't think it has ever been off road. I have been under and had a really good look. My feeling is it is coming from inside the transfer case. the sound only comes on when it warms up and is like a metal on metal high pitch noise. I might track down the previous owner and find out if that's why they got rid of it? once the noise starts its annoying and not enjoyable to drive. I have to get to the cause of this soon or its going back. I will be rigging up some gopro cameras to try and pinpoint the noise this weekend.

Sounds very much like the exhaust expansion joint under the drivers door. Spray it with a good dose of WD40 which will quieten it initially to rule it in or out.

I agree with wv1. Common issue. Easy to fix. Hopefully this is it.

Yes, this was my 1st thought and was hoping that it was the problem. All the research i have done on the expansion joint under the drivers door suggest that you can hear the noise while the car is idling in the Garage and if you put your foot on the end of the exhaust to restrict the flow the sound stops, I have been laying under the car while it is running and there is not a sound coming from the joint, i assumed it was ok. On my next test i will drive till the car is warm and starts to squeal then stop and give it a spray with WD40 then drive again to see if it comes back on. (would WD40 stop a squeal coming from the expansion joint ?)

SOLVED !! i am updating incase someone else has this problem and need a solution. ( funny thing is I've heard a few Pardons drive past my workshop with the same problem ) after much frustrating testing and investigating. I was 100% sure that the sound was coming from the transfer case (where the drive shaft enters the transfer case from the rear ) when Toyota pulled it apart they found that there was significant wear to the rear seal inside the coupling. Toyota replaced the complete outer section and problem is solved. Apparently the seal was misaligned and once it started to heat up with friction it started to rub and cause a high pitched noise similar to a brake indicator.

Thanks for posting the diagnosis and solution.

PS Pardons? Don't you just love the clever predictive spelling guesser we have to suffer?

I have a simlar issue but after Spraying/drowning the flange where the drive shaft enters the transfer case with Inox it has shut it up for now.
Thanks for pointing me in that direction Rhino1.
