  • Low phone call volume in Prado Kakadu

    Hey all,

    Long time lurker, first-time poster!

I have a 2020 Prado Kakadu, which I love. The one and only issue which has turned out to be very frustrating is the phone call volume using the car's Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay.

If I'm parked, at the maximum volume I can hear the person on the other end *just* enough, but if I'm on the road, it's basically unusable unless the other person is raising their voice significantly. I've been taking my headphones with me everywhere.

My local Toyota dealership took a look at this issue while it was being serviced. They updated the software and set the 'In Call Volume' to the maximum in the Bluetooth settings, but still no joy. It's a little better, but nothing good. They're scratching their heads as well. Also yes, my iPhone's volume is at maximum, too.

What I'd love to know from other Prado owners here is if you've had this issue, how did you fix it, if at all? I've never had this issue with other cars I've owned (VW, Skoda, Holden etc.).

Any help would be SUPER appreciated.

    Cheers,
    kak675

Had the same issue in my 2010 GXL for a few years until one day I stumbled on to being able to increase the volume while in a call with the steering wheel volume control normally used for the stereo. Give that a crack.

My Kakadu has a separate volume control on the screen when in a phone call for phone volume (2010 model), does yours have similar?

No the only volume control is the dial on the stereo and the steering wheel buttons.

It’s all BS from Toyota. They are more than aware. I have a new Kakadu and same issue. I’ve found that if you want best sound with phone call “legally” fail from your phone not head unit. Some how it’s so much louder and I actually find myself turning it down.

My outback fix was to only make the calls from your phone handset. It seems to use Bluetooth and is loud enough for me to turn it down. Feel your pain though. Less time on making battery cars and more time on phone connection.

Solved my problem. Its weird, but possibly logical. In normal non car use the Iphone volume buttons on side increase ringer volume when not on a call. When on a call they increase volume of the incoming call. I had mine set to high for both.

After pairing phone with Prado the volume of the person I was calling was low via the car audio - even after using volume increase button on steering wheel to Max. ( could barely hear them). I had called them from inside house and volume was loud as I had set it to loud. Now the weird part. While in the car and talking via car audio I pressed the volume up button on the Iphone ( while call in progress) and it showed volume was set low!! ( 5 minutes before when I tested inside the house on a call it was set to high). It appears as though the volume button on side has 3 functions: 1: to increase ringer volume, 2: to increase call volume when its on a call using as a handheld phone and 3: to increase audio/or call volume to a blue toothed device, when connected by bluetooth.

So solution is, connect phone to car, make a call , and while in the call use phone audio buttons to increase volume to max. Can then use audio volume button on wheel to take volume down a bit.

                    Hi All,

I have a 2021 Kakadu and also had the same issue with very low call volume via Bluetooth or Carplay.

I had Toyota looked at the issue a few times last year however they could fix the issue. That was until my service last month. Toyota have known about the issue but have only issued a fix recently. The fix involves a software update and replacement of an amplifier (I think theres a seaprate amp for the phone calls only).

The part took almost 2 months to come in from Japan. I have just pick up my Kakadu after they have installed the fix and now it works as it should! There is now plenty of call volume to play with both Bluetooth and Carplay.

Just thought I let everyone know as it was a super frustrating issue for me.

                    Thx

Any more details on this fix? Did they give you any paperwork. I am at Toyota now and they reckon they never heard of it. Very frustrating as I brought it up last time I was here.

So Toyota did come back to me and say they also said they need to replace an amp and flash the head unit. Part needs to come from Japan and will take 6-8 weeks. I have a late 2020 Prado but the latest model with the new head unit. So must have been one of the first off the production line. I wonder if this issue was limited to this new lot and has subsequently been fixed? Irrespective, hope this helps someone.
