View your tow bar in the reversing camera

Just wanted to share something I discovered on the weekend - it is very easy to remove the plastic shroud that prevents you seeing the towbar in the reversing camera.

1. Remove the spare wheel cover
2. Remove the camera bracket. To do this involves undoing two bolts - One above the camera and one below the camera (they are very obvious). Then reach behind the camera and unplug the camera.
3. Remove the shroud. Now you should have the camera and supporting bracket in your hand. Turn it over and you will see the shroud is held in by two small phillips head screws. Remove these screws and the shroud will come away.
4. Put everything (except the shroud) back the way you found it.
5. Reverse up to your trailer

Because the camera is not centred on the vehicle it is surprisingly hard to reverse up to your trailer accurately, but nevertheless, have fun trying!

Very interesting!

I found the other day when I had to hook up our camper trailer I needed some more height as the trailer was weighing the car down, so i flipped the tow bar over gaining about 70-100mm and I could just see the top hole of the tregg hitch allowing me to line up the holes without having an agrument with the missus. But on the down side when in the shade it was very hard to see the hole and line it up correctly.

Also found that with the hitch up it limited how far I could open the back door, even with it other the original way I wont be able to open the door fully i dont think. I have a poineer argle camper trailer

Moved the camper trailer today and took couple of photos of how far i can get the door open would need about another 500mm to be able to open it easily maybe once I have the lift kit in turn the towbar back over i might be ok. Although i think it might then hit the stone deflector
At the moment the door would hit the brake fluid container and the hand brake itself

I removed the shroud today and it has helped a bit but I still don't get a good view of the towball. Has anyone been able to adjust the camera down a bit? I had a good look to see if it was possible but there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust

The other option I thought of was if you could get a wider angle camera as a replacement, but I have no idea how you find out compatibility with the wiring harness, is there such thing as a 'Standard' for these fittings?

I use the hitch guide and can see the tips of the guide with the camera :P

Had the ARB towbar fitted a few weeks ago & although I cannot see the towbar in the camera, some experimentation revealed;
1. Towbar is approx. 5mm short of camera view.
2. Towbar centre is dirrectly beneath the "rr" in the "Check surroundings for safety" message on camera screen.
3. Once aware of the above, can put the boat tow-hitch directly over the towball 1st time every time.
4. Yet to try with the Tregg hitch on the C/T but assume as the hitch hangs further back it should be visible in the camera.

I have a reversing camera as standard on my 120 Grande. Can see everything clearly when hitching up the camper trailer. Seems those Toyota boys got it right on this one.

Finally had the opportunity to swap to my Tregg hitch for the Camper Trailer after christmas.
After a number of false starts in the rush to get away;
1. Had to turn the drawbar over as the Tregg Hitch stopped door from opening
2. Had to swap hitch as even upside-down the T-Pin stopped the door from opening
3 . Thankfully 3rd drawbar in my collection (from an old Nissan) allowed clearance for the rear door to open as far as the Camper spare tyre (about 50degrees).

Good new is, I can see both holes of the Tregg Hitch in the reversing camera, & when fitted with the original ARB hitch (In the high position) for boat trailers, I know from experimentation that the tow-ball directly aligns 5mm past the first "r" in "Check Surroundings for Safety" message displayed in the base of the camera view.

With the benefit of experimentation & practice, hitching any (of 4) trailers is no issue.

Agreed - shorty's are the only way!!!

But I sure can't see my Toyota towbar in the camera :?
