  • 12v System

    Hello Prado People

I'm looking at putting in a 12v system into my 150 GXL and wanted your thoughts on the RedArc Manager30 system and display unit. Are these any good and can someone recommend another system to use??

I am wanting to run the following
    69L Coolman fridge
External side lights (for when camping)
    USB Charging
    Laptop charging
    Air Compressor

and wanted Solar input and maybe AC-DC charging when not in use

    Thoughts on what's good??

    Thanks

    Jeff

Hi Jeff. Now on my second 150 series GXL and have gone about Aux battery differently this time. First time was in 2012 model using AGM under the bonnet and monitoring of that was via simple voltmeter, one in the overhead console and another in the cargo bay. Easy enough to see battery level based on voltage. If we got down to 12v it was time to ensure charging soon, via solar or running the car.

In the new car (2021) I have set it up differently due to going with LiFePO4 battery for the Aux. Mounting the battery was the first big challenge. Now that is sorted I have this week added Victron BMV-712 monitor. While I managed to get a relatively cheap battery and DCDC charger, I went the other way with the monitor. Figured we’ll have the car for many years and if we look after the Aux battery maybe it will last. Thus far the BMV-712 seems brilliant. I like that you can see how many Ah you have used via bluetooth, and the app is simple yet highly functional.

Fridge has been on since mid-morning yesterday, battery now at 85%

What was it about the Redarc system that grabbed your attention?

Hi Wazza2, I'd be very intersted to hear more details about your setup and in particular the battery location as I'm planning a cargo mounted battery at the moment (primarily for a fridge).

I have a 2016 with a plain old deep cycle battery under the bonnet with heavy cable to rear for battery, all accessories and power to camper trailer. All controlled by a simple VSR. Has worked well for nearly 6 years BUT if I was setting up a new car for long term ownership I would certainly go down the lithium pathway with a removeable battery in the rear. Much lighter, smaller and probably similar price over the longer term with longer lasting more powerful batteries. Worth investigating as the technology is changing rapidly.
