  • Left side suspension sagging

Hi all, just thought I'd post a small issue that has become evident on my GXL TD Auto, whilst I was out the front yard one day doing the chores, I was admiring the new machine in the garage when to my dismay, I noticed that it appeared to be leaning to one side. Quick measure of the two sides confirmed my suspicions, 10mm height difference from one side to the other, checked for anything heavy in the car - nil - checked fuel load, about 1/4 full, could only come to the conclusion that the suspension on the lift side was sagging. Took it to the dealer I bought it from, they took measurements and said they will contact toyota to check for any known problems to which came the reply "It is within specs". Now this is a vehicle that certainly hasn't had a rough life, one small 4WD jaunt that in all honesty didn't need 4WD and it is still 9,000km young so I certainly wasn't expecting to see any suspension sag till later in life and after it had done some serious work. Maybe time to look at aftermarket suspension, just didn't think I'd be the one to pay for it this early.

    Re: Left side suspension sagging

I wouldn't call 10mm a "Sag" A lean to the left with fuel load is very common on 90, 120 and 150's (and FJ Cruisers too!)with factory or medium after market springs. Your main tank is on the passenger side, so is the battery.

This is why aftermarket springs are marked left/right or use trim packers (like ARB) with light/medium springs; to correct the lean.

Before you stress too much; Jump in the drivers seat and get someone else to measure, assuming you're an average sort of weight it'll level out.

        Re: Left side suspension sagging

Me noticed same phenomenon when I was enjoying the view of my Prado 150 (you know it's new for just 1 week) and my
case is a right-sided driver version and inclination to the RIGHT side.

I presume the fuel tank should be on the left side, so why leaning to right?

Quick measurements from centre of wheel to the curve over the top showed:

        Rt front 51cm
        Lt front 52cm

        Rt back 53cm
        Lt back 56cm

In comfort mode, sports mode, normal mode, or rear suspension height adjustments in H, N, or Lo modes, the difference is always 3-4cm between right back and left back.

Tyre pressures 25 for all 4 tyres.

        My speculations:
        1. 3cm is acceptable limit for Toyota
        2. some form of adjustments failure before the vehicle is delivered to me
        3. unlevel floor (which I will confirm with parking to other places tomorrow when I go to work)

I will try posting some photos if possible, and see why it happens.

My concern is not driving quality or off road ability, which both cases seem to be very good despite this LEANING to right; however if it's adjustment failure, I fear I may need to replace parts due to uneven wear in 2-3 years....

          Re: Left side suspension sagging

Does it have KDSS? If so, they all lean. Landcruiser 200 Series as well. 10 to 15mm is normal.

            Thanks for reply.

            Yep mine got the KDSS.

Why is that with KDSS there will be suspension sagging? Isn't it that the KDSS sets in only when the vehicle is moving and encountering
            irregularities on surface?

            Cheers,

Is there a solution to the lean for non KDSS models?
              is there a known cause?

Even without KDSS new Prado's lean on the passengers side. My front is 6mm lower on the passengers and 4mm lower and the back. The front might even up with a second battery up front.
