  • My new 150 wollowing issues

    Hi Guys

This is my first post and also my very first 4WD.
I have a Prado GXL 2010 diesel / auto and I took it for a run in the country and very
disappointed with the ride/handling in that the car wollows from side to side and actualy
makes my wife feel motion sick.

Can you recommend any suspension upgrades that will address this issue?
Should I upgrade to ARb Old Man Emu solution and if so will this address the problem.

    Thanks guys

Re: My new 150 wollowing issues

I went with an ironman suspension and it certaintly fixed the problem. It now handles much much better and has a nice lift as well. I am sure most aftermarket suspension packages will fix it, the ironman was just a bit cheaper than others.
    Thanks,

    Adam

Re: My new 150 wollowing issues

I got mine a month ago and was disappointed in the Prado`s handling and that was on the way home from Melbourne. The biggest flaw is the tyres, imo, the grancrap they should be called.
I traded them in within two days of getting the car. Got a $150 a tyre trade in and bought 5 new A/T. You will immediately get better braking, better steering response and much less bodyroll. My wife straight away appreciated how much better the car is and I honestly think they make the car less safe to drive.
Typically BFG A/T or the Bridgestone D694 would be a pretty good choice, others have Coopers. Basically most well known brands make a good A/T tyre that is better than the grandcrap. You need something with stiff/tough sidewalls.

I have got Koni on the Jackaroo and Bilsteins on the Liberty. When I upgrade the suspension I will most likely go with King springs and Bilsteins. The Koni`s on the Jackaroo were good for around 100k and now need a rebuild. The Bilsteins have been in the car for 110k and are like new. I appreciate I am comparing cars vs 4wd, but the Liberty wagon has copped a lot of heavy gear in the back. I want to give Bilstein a go, as I want to see if they will have more longevity than the Koni.

For what its worth you spend a lot of time putting up with bad tyres or bad suspension and then when you get good stuff you wonder why you didn`t do it years ago.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

I've had OME on four 4WD's so far and never had a problem, they really do change the handling for the better, but they are a bit stiffer around town. My 150 has 7'000 ks and the suspension is going on next week as the OME kit has only been released this month. One thing that I like about the OME's is the number of places that do stock and fit them so should you need to have a warranty repair ( 4 cars no issues) you are well covered.

I have had three cars with OME and now the 120, happy, no issues. As for the wallowing that comes with the prado no extra charge!!!!!!

Its the bigger sway bars that help cause it, trying to fix the pitching of the previous model.

just a bit confused there, how do bigger swaybars cause wallowing?
in simple terms don`t sway bars resist body roll, springs carry the load and shocks control the bounce of the spring. Heavier swaybars, less bodyroll. Obviously shocks and spring all have some affect. Naturally so do tyres, hence my comment above and how much better the Prado handles with other tyres.

The Prado feels a bit undersprung, but balance isnt too bad at all and there is surprisingly little flex in the chassis.
The dive under braking and wallowing is imo just due to the spring shock combination being underdone.
I am no expert on Prado suspension, ops: , but based on the improvement in replacing tyres, imo the biggest culprit is the softwalled grandtrek`s

All 4wds come factory standard with soft springs and small valved shocks. This gives the cheepest good feel on the bitumen and they all wallow on corners (some worse than others) I have had two LC100s, fitted OME to both and have been very happy with them. By the time I had the Prado home I was ready to book the vehicle in with ARB for some suspension work as my wife gets motion sickness from the body roll as well. We have had the OME installed and problem solved, very happy again. We alternate between BFG ATs and the Dunlops and I can say the the wallowing is definetly the suspension and not the tyres. Other suspensions could well be as good but I had no reason to test them as I had a good package deal from ARB.

according to some on the forum that wallowing is a feature not an issue with Prado. Bilstein and Lovells combination seem to be pretty good

Before you go shelling out a truck load of money for new suspension (and if you are not going to use it off road much) just adjust the tyre pressures. The factory setting is 29psi. Far better safety, performance and fuel economy will be realised if you run the standard tyres at 36 or 38 psi. They will brake better and handle immeasurably better. Wallowing will all but disapear.

                    regards

                    Peter

My 150 doesn't wallow at all - in fact it goes round corners flat if you get my drift - I can't figure out these comment .... I take it your models - like the ones in the UK (except for the LC3) get KDSS - Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System?

                          Hi Danny

No such luck. The GXL does not come standard with KDSS.

I totally agree with most of the posts! i drove one the other day and i felt motion sickness driving it. Even the 120 feels better.
Totally put me off the 150

The biggest difference I have noticed between by 120 and my 150 is the nose dive. When I come to a stop, the nose dives, and lurches up when the stop is complete. I have entertained my kids by "rocking" the car at traffic lights by repeatedly releasing and pressing the brake pedal.

                              Has anybody else noticed this?
