  • Who has upgraded their Tyres on a VX or Kakadu?

    Hi Guys,

I will be shortly getting my hands on a new 2011 VX and will be upgrading with gusto as soon as possible.

I would like to know who has upgraded their 18 inch tyres WITHOUT doing a 2 inch lift. Lift will be coming later - poly airs for now

If possible I would like your tyre choice and opinion -

    Thanks everyone

Re: Who has upgraded their Tyres on a VX or Kakadu?

    Hi,

I picked up a VX last week and drove it straight to Bob Jane's for a tyre upgrade to Yokohama Geolandar G012's. Given the 18" rims, there were only a couple of choices in tyres with Mickey Thompsons being my second option and Cooper's being my third. In the end the decision came down to some reviews by other members on this forum, but primarily budget.

I managed to get a good trade-in at Bob Jane for the origianl tyres so the G012's only cost me $1000 changeover for 5 tyres. BJ's don't do Mickey Thompsons or Coopers and no one else willing to trade the original tyres.

I haven't got a lift kit yet but will do that soon. The tyres are good but I haven't had a chance to really test them out yet. On-road they don't seem any more noisy than the original tyres.

    Cheers,
    VXWesty.

I also put on the Yokohama Geolandar's.
They go well in the mud, sand and highway.

I could only find the ATZ 4 RIB in 275/70/18 - this is the tyre on the white 150 Prado in the ARB website photos - I emailed them and this is the response

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the 150 series Prado on the ARB website.

The tyres fitted to this vehicle are in fact too large for the vehicle as they rub badly on the guard and suspension arm at full lock.
They also put the speedo out of calibration due to the oversize. I have been informed by our Melbourne Head Office that these tyres were put on the vehicle solely for the photo shoot and should not be fitted to the vehicle for on road purposes.

            Tyre size: 275/70/18

ARB does not recommend fitting this tyre size to the Prado.

            Many thanks and kind regards,

I dont really want Yokohama Geo's - personal choice - so it may be cost effective to buy aftermarket 17 inch rims and go back to a wider choice of tyre.

Re: Who has upgraded their Tyres on a VX or Kakadu?

Depending on what sort of changeover deal you can get, it might end up being not too much more expensive to purchase a second set of 17 inch wheels and tyres. 18 inch rubber is a lot more expensive than 17 inch, so the extra cost of the wheels is partially offset by that. With two sets, you can afford to get a more aggressive pattern as it will only be used when going off road. Speedy make the Grande 2 which is a prado replica wheel and can be had for ~$200 each. The cheapest place to get tyres (cheeeeap) would be to import them from Tirerack.com - they ship to Australia apparently. Just keep the price below $1000 to avoid duty, which may require two shipments.

I run 17 inch CSA explorer wheels with Cooper ST-Cs 265/70s as a second set. It only takes 30 mins to change them over with the right gear.

Re: Who has upgraded their Tyres on a VX or Kakadu?

I have a Kakadu. There still is nothing out there that is any better than the Grandtrek 18 inch OE's.

If you come back to a 17inch rim you can go for 265x65R17 BF Goodrich AllTerrians (IF you can get them as Michelin have again stuff up supplies - unbelievable)-

This size has the same rolling diameter OD (776) as original tyre - 775 mm. Going to next size eg 265x70 R17 - then the OD is about 26 mm more (stuffing up speedo accuracy by 3% under reading actual speed - and chance of doing speeding points) - and the spare won't fit the rear door carrier anyway as it is too large in diameter.

Have to watch the offset of the new wheels as some wheels in this 17inch size are 30 mm offset when the Prado 120/150 I understand is a 25 mm offset.

I am about to go down this path way after I must admit a very good run with the Dunlop Grandtrek - 35000 km already but they are getting down a bit much for me now and off roading in mud. Still better of rubber left for the hard top however. Not bad when considering I have generally chewed tyres up byt 35K Kms on the 100 series Toyo.

Most modern cars will overread and fitting larger tyres will usually correct it and bring it back to being more accurate.

A few PP members have gone for the larger 265/70R17 and possibly 265/65R18 and have managed to squeeze the cover on.

The 150 has ET25 offset. The 120 has ET30 offset.

Have a look at xhiler8's build up thread on his zr (would paste a link but I'm using tapatalk at the moment). He thrown on 17" rims with 6mm offset and 285/70r17 muddies with apparently no/minimal rubbing. Looks sweet as. Considering something similar for mine

Thanks amts. I am still wondering whether or not a 17inch wheel from a 150 GXL will actually go on a 150 Kakadu as there is only about 1 cm clearance back of the front brake caliper and the OE 18inch rim. Not a lot of room left for a reduce diameter wheel. I will find out physically tomorrow when I get my hands on a 17 inch wheel. It had better fit!!! or there will be some brand new 17 inch BFG AT's for sale!

The 17 inch 150 GXL rims and tyre fit - my brother bought a 2010 VX last year and asked the dealer to swap him over for the GXL rims and tyres.
