  • 285/70R17 KM2's Regear?

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a D4D 150 GXL, I've seen it discussed that a regear might be needed to suit a D4D with 285's.
Just wanted your opinions on whether or not it is necessary?
    Cheers

    Hello

If you won't 285/70/17 you need a lift of 2".
You must have rims with more offset(uca clearenceproblem)
Rims with offset et15 et 06 et00 are ok buth the tire come out
Its possible you have little problem with mudflaps, you can fix that with heater

If you're in Australia, the max legal offset you can go to on the 150 is et12.5. You will also need to make sure that the tyres don't protrude past the guards or add some flares.

        Hello AMTS,

The 150 GX has +15 mm offset so you can legally go to +2.5 mm offset on all versions.

        regards

        Ross

Hey guys, I am aware of offsets/flares and lifts needed. What I would like to know is if the diff needs to be regeared?
          Cheers.

Legalities aside, why not put them on and see how it drives? It's a fair bit of coin to regear after all.

I run 265/70/17's on my 120, that's about halfway between standard and the 285's you are looking at. I have thought about going the 285 route a few times but I feel that my tyres have me geared as high as I would be comfortable with, without changing ratios.

Have a look for Derek11's rig build thread, I am pretty sure he runs 285's, he would be a good one to ask.

              Cheers Andrew

Currently don't own a Prado, but will in a month or so. Tyres are expensive, so I'd prefer to do the research rather than spend $2000 on tyres to find out it doesn't work as intended.

                Cheers AJ120, I'll have a look.

I had 285's with the auto and it was fine
2010 Kakadu T/D, Auto, Sahara bar, HID IPF 900s, Beaudesert Exhaust. 2' Bilstein lift, Steinbauer chip, rally X mudflaps, kaymar rear door getup, Cooper AT3 275 65 18 on KMC wheels and bfg km2 285 70 17 on dick cepek torque, safari snorkel, ARB roof rack, dual batts, uhf and brake controller and a bit of other crap.

I've got 285/70R17 BFG KO2s on my 2.8L 2018 GXL.... I'm getting horrible performance when towing my newly purchased Jayco pop-up (1.4T) 20-23L/100km on the flat open road @ 100kmh.

I'm contemplating a steinbauer (will that help with the fuel consumption?) or now i've read maybe the high gearing could be the issue? how much would a re-gear be?

I'm guessing the cheapest option is probably drop the tyre size to 265/70.... but who wants to lose height these days! ha

Tires are likely about 15-20% more fuel usage than standard.. If your asking about it, its already an issue to you, change them back to a 265/70 and bring the fuel usage down substantially. A regear will be many many thousands. Towing with that big a tyre on a 4Cyl is just stressing everything out, including your wallet. The 2.8 struggles as it is anyway.

Thanks Piggy. I think that's the plan after all this research. Cheapest way as well. Now just gotta find a buyer for 5 x BFG's with 90% tread left!
