  • What Choice would you make?

    G'Day all,
Got a question that might cause a decent debate. I won't name brands to avoid all that brand of tyre debate.
Here is the scenario 4x tyres on car are at 50% tread. Spare is 100% brand new and about 4 months old.
Tyres are of a reputable all terrain brand.
Puncture one tyre beyond repair so there is a need for a new one at least. As usual the tyre place will do a deal if 4 are bought.
    Would you:
A: Buy 4 brand new tyres (of same brand) so all 4 on car are of same tread depth and the spare is brand new. (also will have 3x 50% spares at home that came off the car which can be rotated through)
B: Buy 1 tyre and put 2x new and 2x 50% on the car with a 50% one as the spare
C: Buy 2 new so its 2x new 2x 50% 1x brand new spare on car and 1x 50% spare at home.
    D: Some other scenario

Hoping this will spark a debate as it's sure to have happened to others as well as me

A or D. Don't mix 50% worn tyres with new tyres on a constant 4wd vehicle.

Depends how much money you've got and whether you intend on doing trips soon.

I would go B and make sure that a 5 tyre rotation is done.

Or D and source a 2nd hand tyre and put it on the spare.

While in the passed I have had tires replaced in 2's.
It has been recommended, as MJ said, on AWD drives, all four tires need replacing at the same time, so a 5 tire rotation is required to even out the wear across all 5 tires.

Keep the 3 good tires, or sell them second hand on eBay, others are always after spares of sorts for one reason or another..

Or on the flip side, you could scoure eBay for a second hand tire, same as your other others, with similar tread wear. Just a thought. Cheaper too.

I agree that similar tread tyres all round is preferable on any car, however when I had my two rear tyres replaced (faulty) I ended up with two new on the rear and two 50% on front. Haven't done any serious off roading since replacement, but for the road, it doesn't seem to have any ill effects.
BTW Toyota only do a 4 tyre rotation under their capped price servicing unless you specify 5 tyres to be rotated
          Cheers

Personally, I can't see the problem with option B.

Running 2 x new tyres with 2 x 50% tyres is not ideal, however I can't see it being a major problem.
