Has anyone replaced their hard wheel cover with a soft cover? Anything available off the shelf or best off with a bespoke unit from a motor trimmer? I'm doing a longish outback trip next year and I thought I might try and save the hard cover from a pounding, nice and shiny now and I'd hate to see it look like a sixteen year old boys face!

Yes, I took the hardcover off with all its associated fittings and put a basic 32" vinyl cover on the spare. I cut a hole about 450mm in diameter out of the middle so the camera can still function (took the shroud off that too). Been meaning to trim it with shot cord to tidy it up but in the last almost three years haven't gotten around to it.My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Only protecting the tyre from Ultra Violents (sic). Hmmm. Maybe 350? Just smaller than the rim so 450 is too big. Anyone a big hole to look through! My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Two trips up through the Centre in the last few years and I was amazed how many Prado 150 spare wheel covers were left on the side of the road.
Apparently, if you blow a tyre the carcass is so distorted you can't get the cover back on and it is so bloody big there is nowhere else to put it.
I was always going to get a soft cover but just haven't got around to it yet. (still)

Recently backed into post and cracked my tyre cover. Only 150 mm crack and no dents but can't believe the cost to repair it. New cover from Toyota is $750. Could get it by paying insurance excess of $350. Had quotes from crash repairers and mobile guys and varies from $330 to $400. Friend has wreckers and cheapest he can source one is $450. Can't believe the cost of this damn thing. Told it's because of the crystal pearl colour.
Crack isn't too visible. Anybody got any ideas how I might fix it? Happy to just glue it and not bother about painting it.
After what I've read on here, sounds like if you get a flat tyre up bush you might not be able to fit the darn thing back over the tyre.
Might be time for the Kaymar spacer and ditch the thing.2012 Crystal Pearl Prado Altitude 150 Diesel Auto. Toyota mats and rear rubber mat. Toyo Open Country AT2's 265 65 R17 LT.
