  • Steel Vs Alloy Rims

    Need some inputs here .
At the moment, I've got 265/60/18 on factory rims. Since I need to change tyres and been looking around for deals.
Saw one at Bob Jane that got my attention - https://www.bobjane.com.au/wheels/wh...tyre-packages/
Dynamic steel rims with Nitto Grappler 265/65/17 - I think this is G2 as I couldn't find this size in original grappler series.
Originally, I was thinking to get 18x5 at either BFG KO2 or Dueler 697s.
But if damn if I can get another set of rims and tyres for cheaper than just a set of rubbers in 18s - I would be keen.

Usual from google.. steel rims vs alloy is mainly on weight. and speedo if I do size up as well.

    Any other cons?

    thanks.

I see no problems, just watch the offset going to 17s. From memory you need to go P15 to clear the KDSS. Plenty of discussion here, have a sesrch. 265/65 17 are the same diameter as your 18s, 265/70 is a size up.

I don’t think ZRs have KDSS, reguardless I can’t see any problems going upto a 265/65r18 ( 31.6” ) on the factory alloys,

if you are going to buy new rims +10 to +20 are probably a better option, you won’t find any cheap aftermarket rims, alloy or steel that are as strong as the factory alloys

If you go with dynamic steel be sure to match the hub boar size to your prado

Thanks you both, mj and rock.
Yeah, ZR doesn't have KDSS. One of two things that I missed out from Kakadu.

Didn't really think about the strength part. Lol must be a reason these aftermarket steelies are cheaper. Also, need to find out how heavy these are as well..

Don't be spooked by cheap wheels. If they are ADR approved or equivalent TUV, JIS etc and the load rating matches that needed for the car then the wheels are fit for purpose. Don't buy no name wheels from Scumtree for example and if you want to check call your insurance company and tell them you are thinking of fitting xyz wheels and want to check these are ok. Insurers will tell you if the brand isn't on their approved list.

I have the Dynamic wheels on the trailer and these came on the camper from the manufacturer. Yes I am running Toyota GXL wheels on the Prado and camper now but that was because I could pick up the second hand wheels for a good price. I would not hesitate to use them or a name brand wheel on my vehicles.

Hub centric rims are definitely the better option

Pay attention to wheel nut seats and correct wheel nut torque

dynamic are one of the better Steelies on the market

              Thanks again guys.
Now is the time of 265/65/17 vs 265/70/17...
Thanks to the link from amts - which is pretty cool. Can visualise the differences between two.
Didn't realise the speed difference is fair bit as well.
Also, need to see the good in the flesh as well.

The most important thing is to make sure they balance the steel wheels and tyres using 'fingers' not the centre ring like they would with alloys. I had steel wheels (which were great and cheap, like 90 bucks a wheel) that initially had really bad vibrations because the lazy tyre shop balanced the tyres using the regular method instead of the proper method for steel wheels. It centres the wheels using the conical stud locations instead of the centre hole.

Just an update. Since there is not much room left in the garage to store a set of rim - decided to get a new set of rubbers But will be keeping this as a reference for future.
If anyone interested - got Nitto terra grappler G2 265/65/18. So far done about 3000k - just on highway unfortunately though. Can't say that I notice anything from OEM ones - lasted over 63k though.
