  • How to remove back plate for spare wheel cover?

    Hi All,

Need advise with removal of back plate for a spare wheel. I removed 4 self tapping screws but the backing plate is still holding on something. I can see a plastic round fastener but not clear how to remove it. Then I tried to unscrew camera holding screws but looks like it did not have any effect. It seems to be many people removed the spare wheel cover and backing plate in order to fix a bigger tyre. So wondering if someone can share tips based on their experience, please.

Yes there's one plastic press in clip fastener. Standard Toyota style, no idea why it's there when the 4-bolts do all the work.
There's a plug for the camera wiring but my eyes were too crook to work it out so I cleaned everything carefully with the camera still attached.

        Hi Conso,

Have you been able to remove the backplate?

I am also stuck, have removed 4 screws but still can't take it off.

Am I supposed to remove the plastic to unscrew another screw and how?

And once I am able to remove the back plate, can I put the spare wheel back on with it? I am not planning on putting the spare wheel cover on to get clear view of tow hitch and hence don't want spare wheel cover on.

        Appreciate the help.

I bought my Prado 150 GX second hand, so can't help from personal experience. I found the following on-line, which ~may~ help... The step comes immediately after first removing the spare wheel cover, then the spare wheel. No mention of any other steps.

Just removed mine. Just use a small flat bladed screwdriver to pop out the top of the round black push pin and it will fall off once you take out the 4 self tappers.

yes it is correct - last step is to pop up a plastic pin.

spare wheel back plate can be completely removed. I did it in order to fit a mud tyre. to get a clear view another part needs to be removed which is mounted in a front of a camera. this topic has been discussed in depth on this forum.
