  • 285/65/17 tyres

Is anyone running 285/65/17 tyres? (200 series size)

I’ve got 265/70 atm which are a good diameter but look dweeby straight on due to the limited width . They are KO2s which only have just over 200mm tread width which makes the tyre look so narrow..

    guess that's a no.

I ended up scoring a set cheap, so will be fitting them as soon as I can find a wheel I like, that isn't black!

17x8.5 in a +10 to +15 in silver/polished are harder to find than I would have thought..

Hey Rascal, how did you get on? How do the 285/65’s fit / look?

Haven’t actually fitted them yet. Still sitting in the shed waiting for a set of wheels they can go on.
finding a wheel I like isn’t proving very easy. Unfortunately I hate the black wheel thing, otherwise it would be easy...

Are you looking for 0 offset or pos10?

I bought a 17x8 ET0 (zero) steel rim with a 285/65r17 Maxxis A/T and fitted it to my 150 with stock suspension & UCAs just to check sizing. Tyre height and width looks just right although tyres stick out past the panel a bit

Max offset to stay legal is +13 so aiming somewhere around that mark.
also want it to stay within the guard so a 285 on a +14 is exactly flush with my rear guards, Measured (and +10 on my fronts, as wheels go in as the arm lowers with a lift) so prob +14 if I can get em..

              Hey Rascal,

What tyres did you get in 285/65R17??

Which state are you in? The stock offset is pos25 and the maximum you can change the offset on each hub is 25mm (You can increase the overall track width by 50mm, at least that is the case in QLD). So zero offset is legal.

At the moment with 285/65 ET0 on stock suspension tyre sticks out about 20mm at the front and the rear is about 5mm. Going by what you're saying then a 2" lift will roughly bring in the wheels by about 10mm?

I actually got some cheap continentals to try out to see if I like the setup, and if I do then I'll get a new set of what ever flavour is in at the time. I have a second set of rims with 33" muddies for off road, so this will purely be for road use.

I'm in Vic, so we have to follow VSI8 which states 25mm track width increase on the front axle and 50mm on the rear.
So 0 offset are not legal in Vic on the front, though technically could fit on rear, not that you'd run differing offsets f to r.

Finally found some wheels I like, so should have them by end of week, and can fit up the 285/65s...

285/65 tyres now mounted on the new 17x8.5 rims. Edge of tyre almost flush with guards on a +18 offset, might be 2-3mm inside guards.

And also rims and tyres are both legal in Vic so no chance of any insurance or police hassles down the track.

I am also looking to go with 285/65r17 in steel - what off set is best?

What offsets do the rims you want come in?

If you just stick with 265/70R17 on the standard rims you get a total diameter of 796mm/31.84 inches and no offset issues, whereas 285/65 R17 on aftermarket rims you get a total diameter of 795.5mm/31.82 inches.

In my case 285s on aftermarket rims, with a wider (numerically lower) offset filled the guards out much better, so it didn't look like a roller skate, as they tend to when lifted. Horses for courses.
