  • BFG, Toyo or Duratrac

Chasing tyre opinions.. 265/65r17.. prefer light truck rating. Mostly do bitumen and soft sand (low tyre pressure 10psi). Occasional gravel and loose rocks buuut doing the cape soon so also need the tyre to be capable of that. Please help!

I can’t comment on the first two however I’m on my third set of Duratrac’s and I can’t fault them. Surprisingly good in the wet for what they are too.

Avoid BFG, crap tyres IMO. Toyo would be the pick, but maybe consider the Nitto Ridge Grappler too?

        Hi Piggy,

Why the negative review of BFG's? What issue did you have? I had KO's and KO2's on my 120 series. I didn't own the car long enough to test the KO2's however found them much better than KO's and D697's on wet bitumen. I've read good things about Toyo's however not sure if they have the same side wall strenght at BFG's due to Toyo's being a 2 ply side wall. I'm particular about side wall construction as I had 2 blow outs due to side wall failure off road. Admittedly the blow outs was with AT20's, not an LT tyre. KO's were crap in the wet and the rubber chunked up a bit when used at 20PSI offroad. I was told that this happened to the rear tyres as I didn't lock he centre diff when driving. Fronts didn't suffer the same problem so there could be some truth in it.

Interested in your experience as I'm looking for a set of LT's on my new car. I was leaning towards BFG KO2's. I wouldn't touch D697's based on past experience. Rubber went hard within 2 years and wet handling suffered. They felt very hard on bumps as well with 40psi.

Torz.93, are you planning to do the OTT or run the development road to the cape? If doing it the right way via the OTT then you might want aggressive ATs however IMO not really an absolute requirement. I did the OTT in my 90 running Bridgestone 697s without issue and they are not a aggressive AT.

If you give a bit more information the responses will be accurate.

I run Toyo AT II 265/70R17 on steel rims. They work just fine and have good traction in the low 20psi range on rock and sand.
Would have preferred their RTs for heavier lugs on the side walls but the aren't available in the Toyo lineup.

Got staked high on the sidewall on a remote track last year, but so did 5 others on the trip.
Plugged the tyre and patched it later, still going without a leak 14,000Km later.

Annus horribilus 3 years ago, drove a Pajero back and forth along the eastern end of the Gibb River Road on BFG KO(?)s.
Got 4 flats, 3 in one day.
Sharp rocks on the side walls and up between the lugs. One stone wedged itself between the lugs for a slow leak at the same time as sharp sliver went right thru the thickest part of a bottom lug.
              c est la vie.

Which horror story do you want.. Its extremely well known that BFG tyres are shocking for balance. Most need a copious amount of weight on the rim to get them within cooee of being balanced. Also well known they delaminate occasionally on HWY, known to lose tread blocks and chip really badly. I've had experience with 3 sets and wouldn't touch them again. One rim needed over 200 grams to balance the damn tyre, moving it to another rim just replicated the issue, so tyre no rim. I also found them to be Horrible in the wet as well. A bit of googling finds I'm not alone in my hatred for them.

One of the guys on the 200 landcruiser forum runs a pretty big 4x4 fleet for his work. over 60 vehicles or so. They got suckered into BFG for the whole lot. He was saying they had to send something like 70 tyres back from new as impossible to balance, they even flew a Rep in and he couldn't get them balanced. After numerous blowouts and poor tread life they bit the bullet and ditched something like 250 tyres to go to something else.

Personally I'm on my second set of Nitto Ridge Grapplers now and would say they are likely the best tyre I've ever driven on. Over 35000 off road from High country to desert and not one issue.

I've a set of Toyo Open Country on my recently purchased 150.... and they're very noisy on road! Look well constructed etc but seriously considering getting something else even with over 70-80% tread left...

                  Cheers Lemo

My first tyres on the 150 were Cooper AT3 and they ended up going out of shape and unable to be balanced, also the Prado wandered around a bit at speed.
I have now had the BFG KO2 for 30,000km and they are great tyres so far. The steering is far better than the AT3's and the guy at Jax Tyres suggested its due to the BFG's being more square edged. I also had BFG KO on the 120 found them to last a lot longer and a better tyre than the original Grancraps.

After running BFs AT’s previously from early 1990s , with my most recent tyre purchase I went with the Toyo AT2. Why did I do that?
Firstly my usage has changed, I no longer get out and conquer mountains but rather spend more time touring with van in tow and beach drive, I do still get out on the dirt tracks. I was initially swayed after a mate ran the same tyres on his Ranger on 2 Cape York trips and a Vic High Country. He was impress after also previously running BFs. When chasing prices I found 2 tyre dealers who sold both and was less impressed with the current BFs seeing similar issues as others have mentioned ie balancing and chipping problems. Then there was the cost savings.
Been running these Toyo’s now for around 30000km and are more than happy and the tyres have meet my expectations.
I am convinced that these days that most manufacturers have good range of tyres and you can pay more for a brand yet receive similar tyre technology.

I’m still planning all the finer details of the trip but the OTT is on my list. I was going to go with 265/70r17 to open up a few more options but more options and slightly more clearance were the only positives among many negative comments.

I do beach trips weekly so this is definitely a bonus. Occasional rocky/gravel type roads but they’re maybe every every few months. Vic high country is on my todo list so that also helps.. did you keep the stock 265/65 sizing?

Used multiple sets of BFGs on 3 different cars over 20 years.Covered most of the worse tracks/roads in the country.Only 1 puncture and that was from a horse shoe nail.BUT after 2 or 3 years they do go hard and get noisy and become a bit dicey in the wet. That said, when I updated to a 150 I was planning to get BFGs again but none available when I needed them so I went with Cooper AT3 LT. 40000 km later and numerous outback and desert tracks later there have been no issues at all. They have stayed in balance, are wearing evenly with rotation every 10000km, they are totally unchipped unlike previous BFGs at 40000, are quite, and are very predictable in the wet. Still 8mm of tread on all 5 so looking at at least another 40000km. I will buy again.

My current set of Cooper AT3’s are sitting on about 95,000kms Of use and still got decent tread left. Been absolutely great on and off road.
