  • 245/75r17 on Kakadu

All, just wandering if someone can quicklyhquickly me out here.

I have a Kakadu (2012) with the 18x7.5 rims with ET25 offset. I have read through a lot of the large tyre sections and heard the mention that FJ rims with the 17x7.5 ET15 offset work and as far as I understand, you can't go 16" rims due to the calipers?

With that being said, will then a 150 gx rim with 17x6.5 and ET15 fit? For reasons of care not to discuss as that's not the point of this post, I am a fanboy of skinnier taller tyres thus believe fitting 245/75r17 on some 17x6.5 ET15 would make me a very happy man indeed. This would be closest way I think I can get to a 7.5r16 on a Kakadu.

I am an ex 60 series owner and love my skinnies.

Any help may just mean a set of Kakadu rims with fairly new KO2s might be available.

    Cheers
    Spence

Point 1: You may need to mod plate or have engineering/ approvals on going down a rim size.
Point 2: Likely the load rating on a smaller tyre will not be compliant to the vehicle/weights & Legalities.
Point 3: 16" "may fit" with a grinding of cast marks on the calipers. (Return to point 1 engineering notes and legalities).
Point 4: Braking will be affected with a smaller footprint. (Refer point 1 on legality and engineering).
Point 5: Insurance will likely be void unless engineer approved/ mod plated. ( Is it worth having an expensive car with no insurance due to modifications)..
Point 6: Smaller tyre and larger sidewall will affect handling and safety of the vehicle.
Point 7: Unless all above Mod plated/ Engineered, vehicle will be un roadworthy and would likely not pass a valid inspection ? Open to Defect.
Point 8: I wouldn't personally even put a K02 on a bonfire, Terrible tires in my experience. Certainly not a "primer" offering them up (IMO).
Point 9: You are looking to increase your sidewall by ~14.2%, And Overall rolling diameter by 3" or 3.3%. Speedo and ODO will be incorrect (The wrong way) which again is non complaint.

Just my thoughts, having been there and gone a size down in rims before. I have to have engineering/approvals done to comply and keep insurance.

Hey Piggy, thanks for the reply. All food for thought and believe is okay. I live in WA and as far as I'm aware, as long as we meet the VSB14 we are good (i.e. changes not requiring certification under section 4.2 Non-standard tyres and rims). From what I read around these forums I think some of the other states may be a little different.

Load rating generally won't be an issue, speed rating however could be. My Kakadu lists 110H but VSB14 (section 4.2.12) allows speed rating of S for vehicles with speed ratings above S, thus 110S or above does not require certification. Not to sure by what you mean by smaller footprint, at a high level a thinner tyre will generally just be longer and have similar sized footprint to a wider tyre based on PSI. Can't see braking being much of a concern, but general handling and cornering I guess. Given they fit prado 150GX with 245s I doubt this will be much of a problem.

Larger sidewall is what I am chasing, which is again appears to be allowed under section 4.2.4 dealing with nominal over diameter of 50mm with MC rated vehicles (i.e. passenger 4WD). I'm interpreting this as wheel/rim combination as the only reference to rim sizing is regarding maximum allowable increase in width and tyre size for said rim size. Speed is 4% out, so the 3.3% will actually bring me close to spot on hence why I am not going bigger. Also, section 4.2.11 for an MC rated vehicle allows an increase in track width of 50mm (going from +25 to +15 offset means only a 20mm increase). I am aware that reducing wheel track does require certification (I believe this applies to such cases as placing GXL rims on a GX and not vice versa due to the offset?).

I am getting this from version 2.1 (Nov 15) so maybe things have changed, had a quick look at the WA legislation and seems to still reference VSB14.

I'm kind of fence sitting on the KO2 , in the past they have worked out well but now with the 18" wheels I'm not so convinced due to my inability to deflate. In fact, I'm going to look at moving away from LT tyres altogether as most of my driving is on road and off road is soft sand with occasional rock work getting to said soft sand. So a normal non-LT AT would most likely best suit.

Definitely will look at making a couple of calls tomorrow though to be on the safe side.

      Cheers

Also, still looking from anyone else who may know... if the 17x6.5ET15 GX rims with 245/75(or stock 70)R17 will fit a Kakadu without fowling the KDSS?

All sorted, managed to get hold of a set of GX wheels and fitted 245/75R17 and all fit.

interested to know what tyres you ended up with in the 245 75 17?
