  • A 120 wheel as second spare for a 150?

    Greetings all,

I'm wondering if I could carry a Prado 120 wheel as a second spare (on the roof rack) for my Prado 150 during a long Kimberly trip (the factory spare is still on the back door).

The 120's tyre dimensions (265/65R17) are the same as the 150's tyres. I don't know much about offset figures though.

Will it work? Is it legal?

    Cheers

I have done it for years.Mine in fact is a steel 120 wheel which requires different wheel nuts. Just check that your wheel nuts suit the 2nd spare. Yes the offset is a little different but it fits and if you are out in the boonies and need your second spare to get you out of trouble to get where you can fix the other tyres ,so what? Besides, carrying the second spare is almost a guarantee that you wont even need the first! [fingers crossed]. That said i never go remote without my second spare.

Yeah be aware that using a 120 alloy on a 150 is illegal as it will reduce the vehicle's wheel track (ET30 vs ET25 for the 150)

You'd think so, especially in Broome, but I can't find them.

As I said if you are out in the boonies an up to your 2nd spare who cares about minor legalities about wheel offsets if it gets you to safety and away from possible danger. "Officer my family died of thirst in the desert because I wouldn't drive on my second spare because the offset was 5mm wrong". Just drive carefully and slowly to where you can get back to the legal ones, In some states using plugs to fix tyres is a no no but thousands do it to get out of trouble. Yep that wheel is alloy and may use the same nuts. Try it and see.
