Tyre Shoulder Wear Limit

Hi,

I'm after some info on the wear limit for the shoulder of tyres. My factory tyres have 5mm left across the tread but the shoulder is around 2mm. Does the legal wear limit of 1.5mm include the shoulder lugs which don't normally touch the ground unless cornering? There's no wear limit lug in this part of the tread.

The minimum legal tread depth is 1.5 mm across the width of the tread, if you’re down to less than 1.5mm on any part of the tread then those tyres are done, even if it was only on one shoulder of the tyre. Also investigate why the tyres wore unevenly, are the pressures incorrect? Wheel alignment? Bushes? UCAs? LCAs?

Thanks, I'll have to mount the spare on the front passenger's side. I had an alignment done in December at 30 000km. The settings were so far out that I suspect the factory doesn't align the front end when they build the car.

The front passenger will wear the shoulder particularly bad no matter what due to being IFS, drivers front does it too but in my experience not quite as bad. I minimize this by religiously rotating & balancing every 10K, when rotating the fronts you have to left to right switch as well as front to back, the rears are just a straight switch to the front, Alignment every 20K, and I run 44psi on the road. One more trick is to strip & flip the tyres on the rims somewhere around 50K to 60K, this will cost about $100. Last couple of times I have purchased my tyres from Jax, they will price match and also when you buy 4 new tyres at once you get free rotate & balance every 10K, plus discount puncture repairs and alignments so all of that adds up over the life of the tyres.
