  • Kakadu tyres

    Hi All

    i have a 2012 Kakadu, i have a 2inch lift on it.

The issue i am having is fitting bigger tyres, I have had 18x9 "monster" rims (with 25 offset) fitted 2 saturdays ago, along with 285 65 18 bfg ko2 (they where hitting on the top control arm) - then they swapped them over 275 65 18 bfg ko2 (they where hitting on the top control arm).

I am wondering what other options i have, would the 275/65r18 fit the original Kakadu rims (18x7.5), or would the 265/65r18 be ok to fit or will i have to go back to 265/60r18?

It is getting frustrating & time consuming.

    appreciate any help

You first need to check that the offset is indeed ET25. Are these it? https://www.xdwheels.com/product/whe...sh=matte-black
If so, they are available in ET35 or ET18 offsets. Suspect you have the ET35 which is why the tyres are hitting the UCA. ET18 is better but closer to ET0 is better again.

      Hi Amts

thanks for getting back to me.

similar rims - refer to thte attached link - the invoice states that they are 25 offset, but maybe they put the wrong offset on.

do you know if the 275 65 18 bfg ko2 would fit on the standard kakadu rim 18x7.5?

Those rims also came in P35 offset. https://www.bobjane.com.au/a/18x9-6-...riant_id=26497
        Get the offset checked.

I'd be fitting max 265/65R18 without getting into clearance issues.

BFG don't have a chart of recommended rim widths vs tyre size so I used this as a guide (note that tyre manufacturers have different recommendations on minimum rim widths for the selected tyre size)
        https://www.tyresizecalculator.com/t...ize-calculator
According to the above, 7.5" is the minimum width to fit 275/65R18. Putting in 285/65R18 gives an error.

From an offroad point of view, narrow tyres perform better than wider tyres (assuming overall tyre diameter is maintained).

            Hi Amts

I just thought i would update - finally after being mucked around a bit by the tyre store, they fitted agreed to fit a different "XD818 Heist - Satin Black - 20X9 6/139.7 P18" which has solved the issue of the tyre hitting on the top control arm on full lock.

they think it was also due to worn lower control arm bushes, so i have order 2 front lower control arms, which i am fitting in the next week or 2.

That depends greatly on the type of terrain you are wheeling on....

anyways, I have a 2017 GXL with a 2" lift and 285/70R17 BFG KO2's and I am not getting any scrubbing on those unless its at extreme lock, and even that is very minor.

It all comes down to offset and +25 is same as OEM, so there’s no point to aftermarket rims in OEM offset if you want wider tyres than OEM. I think you’d need an offset of between +5 and +15 for 285s

This particular calculator is brilliant: https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

I run the same size tyre on a 17x8.5 +6 offset, what offset are you running with the 285s?

Hi all. If I may, rather than starting a new thread, I figure I might continue this one!

                  My setup:

                  - we have a 3.0 VX Prado, and it runs the factory alloy 18” rims

                  - we are due for a full set of hoops, and we are planning a trip up the middle for mid year. No hardcore stuff, but lots of dirt and gravel.

                  - I note that there choices are more limited with 18” rims compared to the more “standard” Prado rims.

                  - we had our caravan stolen (May they experience all manner of bad karma out there), and I am looking into various camper options. I figure it’s ideal to run the same tyre/wheel combo on both trailer and car, allowing for any punctures anywhere

                  - I also assume there would be slim pickings in woop woop for replacement r18 tyres should they be required.

                  - Prado will return to 80-90% onroad duties when back from our trip

                  choices?

                  - stick with 18’s and match trailer wheels. If so, best tyre choice?

                  - change the lot to a different wheel size and store current “fancy” alloys? This would leave unlimited choices I suppose.

                  cheers!
                  Mat

You can fit Prado 17" onto the caravan and leave the 18" alloys on the Prado. They are still interchangeable as long as you have the same tyre diameter and width.
                    265/60R18 = 265/65R17
                    265/65R18 = 265/70R17

There are a couple of ATs that are available in both sizes. Nitto Terra Grappler G2 is one. usually, if there is a version in the 265/60R18, it should come in 265/65R17 as well. I would stick with 265/60R18 / 265/65R17 for towing and touring. Going up a size will mean more fuel and less power.

Ah thanks mate. That makes sense. So, given the relatively low profile walls on the 18's, I had been wondering whether to go a bigger outer diameter, but you reckon not necessary? I've read a bit that full-lock clearance can become an issue too......

Not necessary for your use case. It will just be worse all round.

265/65R18 & 265/70R17 should not have major clearance issues. The worst is probably a slight touch. This can be avoided with wide treaded tyres like the KO2's where it has a really square shoulder. The other more rounded AT's are better in terms of clearance at full lock.

Thanks so much for peplies so far. I’m yet to sort camper, so for now I’ll concentrate on Prado tyres. Going with the discussion with amts (thanks for the info!), looks like I’m best to go with 265/60R18.

Given that, and noting our needs outlined above, could we get a range of options that may be out there? What to avoid? I’m happy to go a bit more spendy for quality. I’m aware it’s all tradeoff - lifespan vs ruggedness vs off-road vs inroad vs fuel economy vs noise vs clearance vs interchangeability with camper

I’m in Melb so happy to travel for a good deal! Likely need 5 (one spare on the barn door)!

OK. Have been looking about for suitable 265/60R18 tyres for our VX 2015 150 Prado D4D. I note (as per AMTS's posts above) that I need to be a bit cautious of "square shouldered" designs, as clearance (standard suspension) could become an issue at full lock. I would like to be able to rotate tyres to/from camper just for emergency puncture duties, but that doesn't matter too much really.

Important to note that, when back home, all driving is city commuting, so wet road grip, noise, braking all important.

So maybe best for our needs in no particular order and not looking at price yet (trip up the middle for about 5 weeks pulling a Cub Brumby camper (still looking! Tend to come with 16" or 17" rims - lots of dirt but also lots of long tarmac). Will do lots more, and won't likely be doing any hard-core offroading):

                            1. Maxxis Razr AT811 - too aggressive for road?

                            2. Mickey Thompson Degan 38 - again, too much for 70+% road use? Apparently good all-rounder including towing? Maybe noisy on road?

                            3. BFG 265/65/18 T/A K02 - read on a thread here will fit and no issues without needing suspension lift? Something about sidewall cracking issues? Too "squared off" to allow clearance?)

                            4. Bridgestone D697 285/60r18LT 118s

                            5. Nitto Terra Grappler G2 114T

                            6. Yokohama Geolander A/T GO15

                            7. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrak

                            8. Falken Wildpeak AT3W - again, will they have clearance with their more "square" shape? Seem to come well recommended.

                            Thoughts? Mat

I fitted the above late last year and it has been great. Tried to get them to slip in wet weather and it didn't budge. Lots of sipes on the tread contribute to this. I got them on a buy 3 get 4th free promo from Bob Jane. Normal price was $247ea 265/65R17 116T, so ended up $185 ea when buying 4.
