Old thread I know. I have run multiple sets of BFG All terrains with no failures on 3 different cars. I am about to replace 60000km old Cooper AT3 LT before a big rough trip on a majority of Beadell Tracks in SA and WA. They probably have 10-15 K left in them but not for where I am going. Reading heaps of reviews it appears that BFGs are not a patch on what they used to be especially in the wet and have become very expensive. Any experience of recent versions to confirm. The Coopers have been terrific covering similar territory to that above and I will probably go with them again as they are still better than BFGs at 60000kn than the BFGs were new.. I have read good things about Falcon Wild Peaks- any experience? I have ruled out Toyo Open country due to reputed softer side walls and poor wet road reviews and noise- ditto Yokohama Geolander X-AT which are probably more aggressive than I need where most kms are on road with one big trip a year.
So probably Coopers again but interested in the Falcons if anyone has experience with them. Thanks.

My mate runs them with no complaints.
Tyres are something you have to run yourself to really form an opinion though. As long as you buy a good brand and rotate them, I’ve never had a bad set if they come from a reputable manufacturer.
I’ve run coopers (4 sets of at, ht and st), wranglers, hankook mt, nitto mt, duelers etc and they’ve all been ok.
My family and mates run toyo at and mt, mates run falken wild peaks and kuhmo mt55 and they are all fine.
The guys that get all precious about one brand are generally being fairly stupid.
I always just pick a size, tread pattern that looks aggressive enough for what I want, look at sipes in the tread blocks and a light truck tyre. Other than that, it comes down to the best deal I can find at the time.
The only one I didn’t like where the duelers off road as they had no grip.
I prefer to buy a tyre 3/4 up the price range and wear it out every 60km than a super expensive one that will last 70-80km but gets super hard and slippery.

Have you looked at the Yoko GO15 AT 121/119, very quiet and great on road, not as aggressive a pattern as the X-AT. I have had them on for roughly 15,000 kms so far and am happy with them.

+1 on the Yoko GO15's. For LT tyres, they handle really well in the wet compared to other LT tyres. Rubber is still supple after 35 000km. The ride feels a bit hard when cold but settles down when the tyre warms up.

I'm also happy with my GO15 LT, although it's still relatively early days, as I've only had them a year / 23,000kms. I don't do serious 4WDing, but do some rugged dirt roads, long distance towing etc, and for all these types of driving they've been good. Been on some muddy roads without problems, although a short section of that thick grey / black mud wasn't easy. I know of another PradoPointer who is currently doing some serious remote rough road touring and towing and he seems happy with them. Perhaps he will comment.

I have travelled 15,000km on my Yokohama GO15 AT LT 265/60R18:
25% - city
50% - towing a 1.4 ton camper trailer on sealed highways
25% - towing a 1.4 ton camper trailer ‘off-road’ including,
• the diverse terrain of the Binns Track (bulldust, lengthy rocky sections, deep soft sand riverbed crossing),
• the Oodnadatta Track and Gibb River Road (corrugations) and
• sandy tracks on the Dampier Peninsula.

I didn’t discern any significant increase in highway noise compared to the standard Dunlop Grandtrek AT, and find the comfort and handling of the Geolandars well suited to the vehicle, both around town and on the highways (although I haven’t driven on them in the wet).

Being a novice, I’m not in a position to compare the GO15 to the all terrain offerings of brands such as BFG or Coopers. However I can say that they didn’t let us down on the very rocky sections of the Binns Track (with tyre pressures appropriately reduced), they have withstood the extremely corrugated sections of the GRR and I have never lost confidence in the tyres (or control of the vehicle) while towing along the many kilometres of sandy tracks on our current trip.

Thanks for that. Territory like that is tough on tires and if they have been trouble free there then they will stand up to most places. Unfortunately my trip has been cancelled and will hopefully run next year. The upside is I will get another 12 months out of my Cooper AT3s so they will be close to 70000 by then.

I thought I should add that my positive assessment of the Yokohama G015 tyres being ‘fit for purpose’ and durable should be viewed in the context of my conservative interpretation of ‘driving to the conditions’ as many others travelled along the most severely corrugated and rocky sections of the Gibb River Road in July at a significantly faster speed than me.

What size tires is everyone using. I need to get a new set for mine but not sure if i should stay with 265/65r17 or change to 265/70r17. Will I be noticing any different in performance on my prado.

Well a year on from post 1 and tyres now at 70000 and still at 5-6mm but new ones needed for the trip in post 1. BFGs ruled out due well known issues, Falkens appear to be ruled out today by my tyre retailer who says they are OK but inferior to the Coopers in the toughness stakes. He also says the new Toyos are good and better than the Falkens and pretty similar to the Coopers. He sells all 4 but has nothing to gain by pushing just 1. So it is down to the Coopers again or possibly the Toyo Open open country AT3W. Anyone with current experience of the Toyo? All are within$10 or so except the BFG which h is $40 dearer. I have to move before the end of June while the sales are on.

New Toyo AT3 tyres fitted recently. They are only 400km old and used for two highway trips, so not much experience for long term use or any work off-pavement.
The original factory fitted Dunlop Grand Treks had worn down and, not made of money, I did not replace them until they were getting towards illegal tread.

So results so far with the Toyo AT3 s are:
. Noiser on the road than the less rugged Dunlops. Also, I think a bit noiser than the older Coopers AT s that were on my old Prado that was traded in 2019. The noise is bearable, as my other half did not make mention of the noise after the first leg of the first highway trip.
. Watching fuel consumption, I think the fuel consumption has increased maybe 0.5L per 100km, compared to the Dunlops. I am hoping only that and not more.

The tyres are fine to drive on the highway. The tyres are rated as 120S while the old Dunlops were rated as 112S. I kept with the original tyre size as I tow a caravan and a bigger tyres are not so good.

For my old Prado, the Cooper AT s gave good wear, drove well and gave good performance. However my experience of having six Cooper tyres during my time with that Prado was that, at various times, three of the six tyres went "out fo round" shaking the vehicle and had to be replaced with plenty of tread remaining.
