  • Side Steps for Prado

    Hey all

Wondering if anyone has designed and made their own side steps for a/their prado. I do a lot of 4wd and I cant justify to the handbrake the cost of buying a set but may convince her to allow me to make my own. Have a bit of an Idea but any suggestions/comments/hickups encountered would be great

Havn't made my own, because over here in the west (WA) locally made steel sidesteps are a lot cheaper than the alloy 'hit one thing and they foldup side-steps' available from toyota.

[Parkside towbars, steel sidesteps black powder coated, approx $450 installed last time I asked].

Yes you could make them cheaper I'm sure, but as I'm no welder, this was easier.

Thanks John for that Ill keep it in mind. Yes you are right about the alloy ones. one hit and they are stuffed, thus why im looking at an alternative.

      Thanks again

        Hi
Another idea might be to leave the steps and the factory flaps off. Mine live in the garage and even the kids and Mrs happily jump in without steps. I made some simple tear off rubber flaps front and rear to keep things clean and have done some hard miles and all is good.
I would only fit steps if they were capable of taking a good grounding otherwise whats the point? They may bend the mountings or fold into the body.

Bent my side steps before the 2 weeks had expired.

I have manufactured my own replacement (chassis mounted) side steps, as nobody made them commercially (or even now at a reasonable price).

They have enough strength to support the weight of one side of the car. This was their primary purpose, not to assist people getting in / out of the car.

any chance you could send me a photo. I have hada few discussions with people and I am starting to think that if I make these they should be capable of being strong similar to what you have. I also need to have them so the missus can get into the car with.

            Thanks

              I'll have to dig for some photo's, but its basically;

              50x100 RHS (2.5mm)
              outriggers made from 40x40RHS (3.xmm),
bracing along the top of the outrigger from the chassis plates to the sills

The chassis plates are 4mm with U bolts to clamp to the chassis.

Ends of the 50x100RHS is tapered (and sealed) to avoid catching on anything.

The add some alum checkerplate over the top for finish & stone protection for the panel work.
