    Re: Tow Bar Bike Rack

What I did was go to a bike shop and buy a brand new bike rack, it is one that is detatchable from the towbar, the base plate bolts on either under or over the the tongue of the tow bar, and is held on by the ball or the nut from the ball, depending on where you place the plate, the bike rack then clips into the plate and is held in with spring clips. This arrangement then allows you to still tow a trailer, the rack will allow you to carry 3 bikes and holds it out far enough from the spare wheel.

      Re: Tow Bar Bike Rack

Are there any legalities to be concerned about if you fit a bike carrier to towbar when you have load levellers also fitted at same time when towing a van etc ?

        Re: Tow Bar Bike Rack

i intend to buy one bike rack for my trip next month, so I have the same question.

i am thinking about the rack that we can put it on the spare wheel. do you bros ever use this one? what is the advantage and disadvantage of this one comparing with the rack that we attach to town bar?

only one thing I know if I use the first one is that it will be very easy to open the rear gate without worrying about bikes and the tow bar.

        thanks a lot.

          Re: Tow Bar Bike Rack

i would be worried about the added weight on the tyre, its mounting bracket and bolts and also the weight on the door which may cause it to sag? You can get bike racks on towbars that hinge so will fold down to open the rear door or some even remove them as they clip into place. I also have another rack but never used as yet that could fit with bolts or weld onto a flat steel bar on the A frame of van. It has a base plate with 2 uprights each end that are about 15cm long and 3 cm in diameter [sizes are all from memory] The rack itself goes up and then extends out horizontal with these 2 arms for the bikes to rest on. the rack simply sits over the 2 uprights on the base and have a circlip to hold it there. I havent got around to trying to fit it somewhere on A frame (it could also sit on a towball at back of car or back of van) as I cannot weld and been too busy on other stuff. I see no reason why a standard bike rack at supercheap etc couldnt be fitted to a similar flat steel bar on an A frame whether or not its hinged wouldnt matter. all comes down to what you have on your A frame area now i guess
