If you removed the flares then you would need to go for narrower tyres as they would protude too far. Also is this for a 90 series or 120 series? Posted in 90 series section but you info shows you have a 2009 model. I assume you are after info on a 90 series since there are pictures floating around of the 120 GXs without flares. Later model GXs included the flare kit.

Schaffer, Here in colombia they stooped making the 90 series until 2009. Mine is a 2008 model. I am aware of the tyre issue, but I would like to see how it looks without flares, since the 90 series 2 door version comes without flares.

      Any one with pics??

      Cheers

Re: Pics of your Deflared 90 Series

I am pretty sure that here in Aussie land the 90 series came out as an "RV" model which was flarless. Do a image search in google for "prado rv" and some come up.

Yes the RV models in both the 90 and the 120 have no plastic body trim and flares. Here is a pic of mine, I added rubber guard extentions because of the weels that I chose, and it is flexible and will not crack up on impact. I must add,if you pull the plastic of your GXL it will NOT look like this,as they are totaly diferent.

Just in case you weren't aware, the panels on the models with flares + cladding have square holes all along them for the clips that hold the cladding on. If it wasn't for that I'd have taken mine off ages ago and fitted aftermarket ones (I keep tearing the factory ones off) so you'd have a fair bit of bodywork to do if you 'deflared' it.

I love the way they look. Gorgeous rig, they look more aggressive like 80īs without flares. I have a flare that part of the clips are broken. so when i wheel it sometimes rubs and falls off. I am going to talk with a buddy who has a body shop to see how much it would cost to do this mod..

cheers and thanks for the pics-.

Oh my god! They look butt-ugly without the flares! At least put some aftermarket ones back on if you remove the originals. I can understand removing the factory ones - I have had to rebuild the clip towers on my left hand rear flare and what a pain. Some of the new landcruisers over here in nz have no flares and they just look budget/ordinary/no frills/el-cheapo!

                    Here's a budget option;

Cover the holes with masking tape and spray over with "Bedliner" (thats that thick, hard, protective coat they use in the trays of utes (pick ups)

Here's a; 120 Prado platform Lexus as an example:

Ahhh, cleverness, I'd considered spraying my flares with bedliner to avoid having to match my 'mystery gold' colour, but never thought of covering the holes under the cladding and spraying the panels (I'd still need flares, but could get aftermarket ones. *ponders the possibilities*

                        Derb,

You got that right. As for Japan - this was build for military. And do not need anything fancy.

They sure do have a lot of unessisary plastic crap on them when you see it in a pile.Thats exactly why i went for the RV,a good base to build on.

I would have to agree with TEZA H, the flares are nice when you dont plan on making it a true 4x4 but when you want to build on it, I would have to say that they do more bad than good, especially when mild rock climbing I have torn off my rear flares when articulating completely.

Most Prados will never be taken off tarmac. The plastic is a great way to avoid costly repairs to doors and fenders if someone rubs their bumpers on your Prado at the mall. The plastic will crush before the metal bends and scratched plastic does not rust like metal with cracked paint.

It might be enough to rip the old plastic molding off, clean the paint on the panel, new plastic molding and clips and the Prado is ready. Or you could take the whole vehicle to a bodyshop to have its panels straightened, painted and then pay alot more then for the plastic trim piece.

Itīs not profitable for Toyota to think about making their vehicles easier to modify, since most will never be anything other than stock grocery-getters, they are better off designing them to be easy and cheap to fix when they get into fender benders at a parkinglot.
Prado GX ī97, 1KZ-TE, 38" tires, Hella and IPF lights and a lot more stuff.
