Vx or grande brakes/abs/traction control unit

I need to do my brake fluid and adjust the handbrake as the handbrake is almost non existent!?

I have a 97 grande. So is there a special way of bleeding the brakes as I'm used to opening the nipple while pumping the old fluid out on non ABS.

Apparently I need DOT3 fluid? Which sucks as I have about 5 bottles of DOT4 in the garage. Do I need genuine Toyota or can I go different?

No Mate, Dot 4 is perfectly fine to use, and just bleed them just like any other vehicle you have done

I've just read conflicting articles. The ABS relay had to be removed or turning one of the other wheels so the ABS would engage and you would be able to get old fluid out of the ABS unit.

Then there's the other thread about Grandes with problematic Master Cylinders or Boosters and costing a small fortune to replace? I can't remember, but this made me apprehensive.

I've actually booked the car at a brake shop to get it it bled and have the handbrake looked at too. We have a small trip to Bribie this Saturday and work is not leaving me much time to try it myself:-|

Who have you booked with, reason being is, I have noticed that Brakes Plus (at Underwood), do a special deal, if you replace any brake pad with them (obviously they have to do the work), when that part is due for replacement again, they do it again for free every time after that. Could be something to look into

I had a place in Ipswich do it. Your place sounds good and maybe an option for next time.
They were meant to have been bled.

So I have the car back. The brake pedal still feels spongy and cannot feel any difference from before.
I might replace the read pads and see I that makes it feel better. Though keeping pressure in the pedal, it slowly goes down past the initial stopping point? Something I might have to really look into!

The handbrake has been adjusted but apparently the rear axel seal/s hae leaked diff fluid onto the drum shoes reducing their effectiveness! Something else I have to look at now.

You can get sponginess when you replace the pads, this is normally only a temp situation until the new pads bed in, another reason for sponginess is the pad compound.

Don't forget to bleed the load sensing valve as well. If the ABS fitted trucks have one.

Just don't do this on my model with the integrated ABS/traction control unit or you just spent $3K
100% Dot 3 only for this model.

Bhss at Smith st Capalaba reco the abs master cylinder/booster assembly, fit stainless sleeve in the bore, new seals / cups etc and fit reco pump motor.
