  • Brake light on when tapping/pumping break pedal

After spending way more time on this forum than I probably should, looking for (and finding!) useful tips and advice, this is the first time that I was unable to find what I was looking for. So trying mu luck to see if there's somebody out there that might be able to help me out.

We've owned a 97 prado 3L diesel for over 3 years now and absolutely love it. However, I've ran into some issues with the breaks this weekend. It was time to replace the front pads, but after replacement I've noticed that when I hit the break about ~4 times in quick succession the break light comes one for a about halve a second. If I keep tapping the break it stays on, but as soon as I stop it turns off again. I've only noticed this after the break job as I was feeling if the breaks were solid again, but under normal driving/breaking conditions the light doesn't come on.

The car hasn't noticeably lost any stopping power and past its warrant today. The mechanic agreed that the breaks are working fine and doesn't know what could be causing the light to come on. I briefly explained the issue to him as I brought the car in and when I picked it up he was convinced he wouldn't have noticed if I wouldn't have told him as it's not normal breaking behavior to hit the breaks like that. I'm unsure if this behavior is caused by the pad replacement or if it has been there for a while, but as I now know it's there I decided to flush and bleed the break fluid, but unfortunately this didn't fix the issue.

Any thoughts or advice what this could be of what I could look at? My only thought is that it might be a worn seal in the master cylinder, but I don't like replacing parts based on a guess :-)

Your explanation of the problem is not clear to me. Obviously, the brake lights should come on when you press the brake pedal. And, it should extinguish soon after releasing the pedal.

I don't know how the brake-light switch is operated in the 90-series. Some cars use a switch operated by the movement of the brake pedal while others are operated by the hydraulics (brake fluid). If your problem is the slow release of the brake lights, the switch could be showing its age with the mechanism binding due to dirt or perished rubber.

I think he means the brake light on the dash comes on.
