Auto Transmission shifting fault

Hello, have a VZJ95 v6 auto and the automatic transmission is not changing gears the way it used to. At highway sppeds it does not appear to be in the correct gear as it does not perform well under load as if it is in the incorrect gear. Have played with the detent cable adjustment which doesn't seem to change the problem much. Have heard that the Air Mass Sensor could cause problems with the engine not detecting changes in air flow correctly etc. Was thinking about trying another one. Have only ever changed the automatic transmission oil and never had the pan off to check if there is a filter in there etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
