  • Diff Clunk In 1st 2nd 3rd gear

    Hi all,

    I recently purchased a 97 RV6 3.4 petrol manual 90series (love it already!)

but I’ve noticed a clunk in the rear when disengaging the clutch in 1st 2nd and 3rd.

when putting the car in 4H the clunk is far less noticeable and no noise at all in 4L.

any ideas as to what the issue may be? I’ve check the unis, shaft, transfer case mount and diff mount and none of these seem to be the issue.

any help would be much appreciated!

Yep check the slip joint, moves freely. And check the unis as well

There is always a little bit of "slack" in the 90 drivetrain, I put it down to having three diffs and their combined play?

Hi people, I'm brand new to the prado world, just bought a 2001 Prado 3L diesel auto KZJ95R. I hear a clunk/thud after coasting and then accelerating. I'm wondering if this is a diff, uni or perhaps engine mounting bolt. Will take a closer look over the weekend but just wanted some clues so I know where to start looking. Thanks in advance.

Check upper arm bushes on the rear diff.
When bushes are worn, the diff will flop up/down as you power on /off.
Very noticeable in an auto. When they kick down a gear you’d think the diff was coming through the floor.

Hi carco, I checked the upper bushes on the rear diff, there is no play and they look good. I checked the transfer case as well, the bushes underneath it look very good as well. The uj's were inspected for the roadworthy. The drive shaft does not have any play when I push it at 90 degrees to its length. The only thing I can see is that on the rear and front shafts there is a section where I can see about 5mm of movement with grey grease which looks like there should be some movement in the driveshaft under operating conditions. Could this be the noise I'm hearing? If I accelerate slowly the clunk does not happen after coasting, only when I accelerate normally or aggressively.

Did you check the bushes using a bar or long screwdriver? Visual check is no good as the arms are under big loads when operating. If the vehicle is lifted, the load increases due to change in arm angle.
Next check would be diff backlash. You’ll have to drop the propshaft at the diff pinion flange. Don’t be alarmed at the amount of backlash as you’re looking at the combined pinion to crown wheel lash plus spider gear mesh as well as spider gear end float. It all adds up.
The grease line on the spline shows how the spline slides in/out as the suspension travels. Always good practice to grease universals and splines. Don’t forget the double carden joint at the top of the rear shaft has a nipple up the centre.
From my 90, it was worn upper arm bushes, could even see shine marks of the cheeks of the mounts.
While the rear shaft is off, check the transfer case chain. Normally the diffs will take up before the chain so you can’t do a simple check. With one shaft off, you’ll get a clear indication. I really don’t think your symptoms are stretched chain, but check it anyway.
After that, it gets more expensive…..transmission check time. Have been there too.
Finally get onto the Mighty 90's Facebook page.
Way more info than on here as you can see, the old 90 section doesn't see many replies.

You can use a Jack on the pinion flange to simulate power on/off. Don’t damage the dust slinger.
