  • Trailer/caravan connection issue

I just bought a caravan but, when I hooked it up to my 2000 GXL Prado, there doesn't appear to be any power coming through my small round 7-pin connector. I checked the "TAIL" fuse but it looked fine. There's also an LED tester on my car-to-caravan plug but nothing lit up.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Make sure you check the fuses with a meter. Some blown fuses are not easily detectable.

Do you have the factory wiring with the repeater for the indicators? From memory there is a separate fuse. Sorry cannot remember where, that was 6 years ago. I had the same problem after hooking up someone else's trailer which had a dodgy plug. The trailer wiring shorted out tail lights and it blew a fuse that took the lot out. I cannot remember which fuse or even where it was. Do all the car lights work ok? If they are ok then look in the jack compartment space and look for a fuse around the module. I am of course assuming the plug worked previously.

Thanks, I'll give that a go... although, I'm just assuming "TAIL" is for the trailer and not just for the tail lights.
I did look for a fuse in the jack compartment but I couldn't seem to find one.

All the lights on the car are working fine. I'll have to have a bit more of a look around for the trailer connection fuse... it must be in the jack compartment somewhere!

Also, I'm sure the connection has worked previously when I towed a trailer to the tip several months ago.

            Multimeter

I just checked the plug using a multimeter set to 20V.

I had the headlights and the hazards on and I could see the voltage reading was going up and down (presumably due to the hazards).

I'll see if I can back the car up tomorrow and do some more testing.

Do you have another trailer you can connect to like a neighbour or mates? Sounding like a wiring problem in the trailer.
