  • Fuse box install in the rear of my 90

Just a question regarding wire size for adding a fuse box to the rear cargo area
I will run a fridge, Inverter, Air compressor and some cigarette sockets
Could someone recommend the size of wire and what fuse box should I use
    Thanks

I used 6B&S for mine...Ran from the isolator, through the firewall, under the kick trim and through to the back.

Dual Battery Wiring & Fuse Breaker

Narva 8 way fuse box. Pic was when i did it all. Since then, I have added a few more things....so its currently looks a bit different, but this will give you the idea. I currently run lights via merit, inverter via anderson plug, fridge via anderson plug, usb & 2 ciggy plugs and a solar input.

    How it looks now..

Great job thanks for the diagram and the pics hawks
I will follow your lead on this as I have know idea
I have just done the second battery install very much the same as yours but sits back further
Next on the list is the draws to fit all my shit in and to hide every thing

Similar to the setup in my 120. Used a twin 100 amp circuit breaker on the battery to protect the large main cable, then cables from rear fuse box to fridge, radio, inverter, solar panel.

Try to avoid using push on connectors on the fuse box as volt drop could happen. Screwed fittings are always best.

This set up cost under $200 not including fitting or the cables from the fuse box out.

        Rusty.

Try to avoid circuit breakers also as they tend to have a voltage drop across them also. But ALWAYS fuse the main power cable within about 18" of the battery.

Should I run the earth cable back to battery or just earth it near the new fuse block

Either is ok as long as you have a good connection. If you have a solar infeed (not through a DCDC charger system) read what the manual says about connection to the battery. Some recommend running both +ve and -ve cables directly to the battery.

Measured volt drop over the circuit breaker, less than 0.2 v at 50 amps. Have had more volt drop over blade fuses.
i will never use those thermal breakers as volt drop is present and they re set after they cool and eventually will burn the wires (in case of short).

i was also taught to take the earth back to the battery for best results.

Good luck on whatever you decide to fit.

-200mV@50A across a circuit breaker may be considered acceptable (I'm a little A retent I've so it's not ok with me but I don't question others on it) but others factors must also be considered.

For instance 200mV at 14.2V is good. But that same load that draws 50A at 14.2 will pull more current t as the battery voltage drops... to say 12 or 11V. That 50A could very well go upto 60-70A dependant upon the load itself. This cause a higher voltage drop.

Secondly, those circuit breakers are thermal also. Just not auto resting. Given that they are mounted in the engine bay you also need to consider that as the engine bay temp rises this will heat the bimetalic strip inside the breaker. While it wont break contact, the laws of physics say that it will start to expand therefore lose some tension on the other side of the breaker. Causing the resistance to go up and the voltage to go down.

With that said, a circuit breaker is ideal in that you can easily re apply power once the issue has been resolved. Great for when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere. With that said, the main fuse should never blow. It's not there for overload protection, it's there for dead short protection.

On the last note, running your earth all the way back to the battery is a costly expense and not worth the time. Electricity will always take the least path of resistance. This is not necessarily the shortest physical distance. Earthing to the chassis is always the better option for the best results. Assuming conventional current flow, you must always put back what you take out. If your earth is the same size and length as your power wire it is safe to assume you have doubled your voltage drop. The chassis of the car is the biggest damn earth wire you will ever see... so use it.

An awesome move that many people forget is to upgrade your battery to chassis wire. If you take a look at the 90 series, the motor has a whopping hunk of 4ga cable for its earth. Yet the chassis gets a piece of 8ga. Albeit it's only 8 inches long but nonetheless... if you change that or add to say a hunk of 4ga as well then the entire vehicle benefits and not just your rear accessories.

Don't mean to start any arguments or offend anyone. Just putting forward some other views on the topic.

Your are not offending RanJ I put this up to learn and listen to people on how to do things
Everyone will have there own way of doing things in the end but we should all listen to everyones point of
