  • Some Prado Electrical Dramas (warning lights + alternator?)

    Fellas,

This afternoon whilst driving my prad I noticed by brake warning light, air flow/filter light and battery charge warning light all came on simultaneously when braking. When accelerating again the lights went off then back on again under brakes. :? This went on a few times this afternoon.

Driving my car again tonight the 3 lights came on and stayed on regardless of braking or accelerating. I assumed it might be just a lose wire somewhere so I kept driving, with full lights stereo etc. When I arrived home and turned the car off to unlock and open the gate... Flat battery. Pushed it into the garage where she is now. I've had a surface look including fuses and can't find anything out of place.

My prado is 1999 RV 3.4L V6 model.

What you all reckon?.. anyone have any ideas?

to narrow it down and give others more info,
    charge your battery fully,
start your rig and check voltage off the alternator.
then we can have a more calculated guessing game

I've measured the voltage across the battery whilst the car running at about 1500rpm... was about 11.6V. (That was before I took the battery out to recharge it.) It stays on that fairly steady on 11.63V so does that mean I can rule out the alt. belt slipping?

alternator has packed it in. need to get a new one or have it re-built.
start there, but that is a definite problem.
should be about 13.8v at 1500rpm

Re: Some Prado Electrical Dramas (warning lights + alternator?)

            hey

am having the same problems now

turns out alternator brushes or reggulator should be the problem.

however i have researched this problem and alot of 90 series prados are experincing it after drving through mud puddles. the only feasible alternative that i can find to this is to buy a second hand alternator from the wreckers (quoted $125)and keep it as a spare in case the alternator packs it in, then change it and get your original and hopefully good one repaired while still having your daily driver working

            cheers

Yes a petrol Prado will go about 8km before stopping....Diesel about 200km! A manual Diesel perhaps even further!....my old HJ60 - till the fuel ran out!

Re: Some Prado Electrical Dramas (warning lights + alternator?)

StormyKnight i disagree, i have done this twice in my petrol auto and got over 100kms on the second occasion (including about 5kms slow low range work) with the car still starting again once i was home (all lights, stereo etc off).

After doing this the second time i decided to have a go at fixing it myself. Pulled apart the entire alternator and reg and cleaned all the mud and junk out with contact cleaner and put it back together, sure enough it worked fine when i put it back in and has been going strong ever since, over a year now. Definately worth a try for those who do this in the future. When i do the cape run i will be taking a spare alt with me tho for sure.

                  Cheers, brent.

Re: Some Prado Electrical Dramas (warning lights + alternator?)

Sorry guys I can only go from my particular mud experience experience....

2 petrol 90 series got about 8km before having to be traybacked home....

Mine drove 150km of which the last 70km was at night albeit I had only my parkers on.....it also included a jump start as I had to turn it off half way home.

Oddly a petrol 100series made it back to town OK but the battery was had it.....

                    Cheers

Re: Some Prado Electrical Dramas (warning lights + alternator?)

                      Stormynight,

While the 90 series may have only lasted 8 km I think you will find that they had others issues before the final mud induced alt problem.

The petrol 100 series would use a similar amount of electrical power to run as the petrol Prados (auto v auto, manual v manual of course) so as long as all had fully charged batteries in good condition before the alt failure all should have covered a similar distance/time before the battery charge was insufficent to run the engine. Yes battery size will have a bearing.

The 90 series V6 would use approx 10 amps to run the engine only once started I would think, so you should get at least 1.5 to 2 hours before stopping from a fullly charged battery.
Obviously if you have headlights, AC stereo etc running then it won't last as long, and if you have a dual battery system that you can swap or join then even longer.

I got 2 hours plus enough to restart (just) also had the same warning lights on, air flow, handbrake warning and battery. The auto elec said brushes were "melted"

Old thread but rates high on a google search, so relevant replying here I think. Thanks for the info, I had the same set of lights come up and only realised the battery wasn't charging when the car died. Not far from home, I was able to pull the battery, take it home, recharge it, then I was able to get the vehicle back home. I noted the telltale voltage drop on a multimeter after starting the vehicle. I'm going to try my own repair on this unit as it isn't the main driver, I'll report back on my findings.

I don't know the correlation, but I sat through Marcia in Yeppoon and after losing power I used a little 150w inverter to charge phones and drive the solar hot water pump. I periodically took the vehicle for a drive to charge it back up, and on the second day or so I think, I got the dash lights. So... I don't really know the cause, whether having the inverter on when I started the car caused some kind of back surge or if the very low battery charge overloaded the alternator, or if it was just some big coincidence that something was ready to go anyway. Also, I have a DTDAuto diagnostic unit which is capable of picking up OBD1 fault codes, it came back with no reported faults, so it seems it's only reported on the dash lights.

Thanks for this old post I was able to keep driving back from to Melbourne when the warning light light up.

Turning off stereo, AC, headlight, etc. I was able to drive 250km+ over 5 hrs (bad traffic coming into melbourne). And when I got home I was still able to start the car!

My prado is 21 yrs old / 330K+ kms. Bought the brush from ebay ($25). It says for Landcruiser 80 series but apparently it's the same.

I took out the alternator and removed the rear cover screw:

You can see how much worn the 21yrs old brushes are!!

                            I wrote it all here:
