  • 3 sec after start EFI fuse blows

    Hi all,

    my Prado95 Petrol/LPG makes me crazy. After a couple of days on Fraser Island (offroad & creeks crossing) the car was fine until Surfers Paradies.
    After starting the engine and running for about 3-5sec the EFI fuse (15AMP) blows. Because the ECU is on the same fuse, no fault code could be stored.
    I googled a little and some reasons are a short in the o2-sensor wiring, but my engine did not have o2-sensors (I did not see where there should be), so I think a have co-adjustment.
    In my case, finding that short is understanding whats happening.

    So guys: what’s the process of time when starting an engine?
    - Ignition off (EFI relay open, COR open, Low temp sub fuel relay open, Fuelpumpselectrelay is on main tank pump but powerless because COR open)
    - Ignition on (EFI relay close, COR close, Low temp sub fuel relay close)

    But what happened after ~3sec? FuelTankchangeover? Because of LPG I have no main tank. I don’t know if they bypass any switchover parts.
    I think I can here a relay clicking before the fuses blow again.

    Any ideas?

    update: not wasting fuses i use now a circuit breaker (manual). Seems this one is a little more passive/lazy than the 15A fuse. Now the engine runs for about 10-15 sec. So that means, that it is not a switch by a relay or the ecu that corses the short. Right?

      Hi,

      Don't have a 90, but from what you have written sounds like an overload situation, the only item that jumps to mind after a three delay would be the fuel pump, the fuel pump won't start up running continuously till the engine turns over.

      Only a guess, you really need to look at the wiring diagram and start isolating whatever the EFI fuse feeds. If it turns out its the ECU blowing the fuse then it may be something the ECU controls again such as the fuel pump.

        update: after a few tests with switching on gas imiditly and switch off the fuel tank changeover switch ( so that the fuel pump relais is off) the engine still runs. stay on gas, but activating the relay by switching to sub tank (remember there is no main tank) the engine stalls.
        same again: starting, switch to lpg, switch off sub tank AND remove the relay. then bridge the relay to sub tank and switch back to petrol. all good, engine still runs.
        so anybody could measure the resitance of the fuel pump select relay (coil) (nippondenso 056700-4750)? i have 76ohm

          and: do i need that relay? I have no main tank, no main fuel pump and no fuel tank changeover solenoid (because LPG). So could it stay bridged? There are other relays that stops the fuel pump in case of an accident, right?

            Some LPG cars start on petrol and switch to LPG after a few seconds.
            You state your car is petrol/ LPG. Is it dual fuel or is it full time LPG?

              Hi, it's dual fuel. It starts only on petrol. I have to switch manualy to LPG. After switched when the engine is over around 1500rpm for the first time it's on LPG

                if you have had a tank removed, I would be checking the wiring where they removed the tank,
                maybe they have just cut it off and left it taped up somewhere and it has now developed
                a fault situation?

                76 ohm sounds ok for a relay coil.

                  Hi LeighW. Sounds resonable, because when the wires are ending in nowhere or at an empty connector, the creek crossing could affect these loose wires ....
                  I could test: On LPG I bridge the Relay to main tank fuel pump. Is a short in that wiring to nowhere the fuse should blow. If not than the wiring is ok, but the coil in the relay isn't (or the flyback diode inside the relay)

                    update: bridging the relay to the main fuel tank pump (on LPG) and the fuse stays good. so the old wiring did noct affect this circuit. Seems it's the changeover relay itself.
                    @LeighW: do i need that relay? there is no power on the fuelpump on ignition, only when starting and when the engine is running. So no security risk of pumping fuel while engine is off.

                      Can't say as I don't know the circuit, it is unlikely that the relay would be the problem if your testing 76 ohms for the coil,
                      you could try swapping the relay out if there is a similar unit in the fuse block, ie aircon relay?

                        There is no similar relay ... The circuit is linked in #5
                        But: I build a little test circuit: only the relay coil - 5 Amp fuse - battery. But reley works and fuse did not blow.
                        So at the moment my conclusion is: it's a bit of everthing. the loose connectors to the main tank fuel pump and to changeover solenoid are wet because of creek crossing. and the coil is not 100% ok. but all togehther the sum of all shorts blows the fuse. each alone (testet by bridging) at the fuse stays stable.
                        Possible?

                          If you can get it to run by linking out the change over relay I don't see any problem in doing that after looking at the circuit diagram,
                          just get yourself a couple of spade terminals and make a strap.
