Where is this good earth cable? I think there isn't any but if someone knows better I'd sure like to know.

I think there is only one connection between the chassis and the negative. It's at the right battery. A relatively thin and short wire is crimped into the same cable shoe as the fat starter ground wire. This short wire is not designed to carry the starter current.

The perceived funkyness (by me) is because:
    - Only the right battery negative pole is connected to the chassis.
    - The two plus battery poles are connected with a fat wire, but the two negative battery poles are not.
    - The left battery doesn't have a wire to the chassis.

It's not obvious that both batteries supply the same current during starting.

Aha. Toyota probably did it that way to save money on copper. It is a good idea to earth both batteries to a common heavy engine block bolt and run another good earth cable across from the engine block to a heavy chassis bolt. One side of the engine mount to the other (bridging the rubber) generally works. Some vehicles run an earth strap on the back of the gearbox to the chassis - nice short cable saves money. I´m with Derb on this one. Manufacturers make their cars so they suit most of their prospective buyers. Wires are just large enough to work, when you add aux electrical systems and high wattage accessories the original wiring is not up to the task of suppling power to everything.

I always put bigger ground cables and marine battery clamps on my cars and 4x4s. I found my 1KZ-TE to start better after I grounded both batteries to frame and body and put a bigger ground from engine block to frame.

I went with 50mm2 welding cable (very fine strand, very tough oil-resistant double insulation) for the frame and engine block grounds, I have a bunch of this cable from an old forklift charging station so I use it where I can.

I also used this 50mm2 cable to rewire my alternator after I got my aux battery. I thought to myself that it could not hurt and this would be another thing I would not have to worry about when I get a bigger alternator. I was a tight fit though.

Marine battery clamps make it easier to add cables and to disconnect certain cables. They have a stud to fit cable eye terminals on, and you can either use a nut or a wing nut to fasten the terminals.

Getting way off topic, but I used that welding cable ( 35mm not 50mm ) to make some jumper leads. Better than any store bought jumper leads. The cable is very flexible and the insulation is silicon based.

            dear larry
i own a prado tz imported from japan
it had the exactly same layout as u described
i have installed a isolator in between
how ever the battery on your right side (left of car when looking from inside) can be used as a starter battery
the battery near the fuse box on a diesel car can be used as an auxilary battery
this will get discharged if u run fridge etc off this battery
then u have to jump start or short the positive terminal of both the batteryes to resume the power

I have recenlty bought a second hand Diesel Prado (year 2000, TX model), oringially imported from Japan. It has two batteries under the hood. My auto electrician tells me that both batteries are required to start the engine. I was hoping to use just one of these batteries to start the engine and the other for running a fridge and install an isolator between the two batteries. The auto electrician says no can do as both batteries are required to start the engine. Is he correct?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Quick bump to an old post. I have a '97 KZJ95 which would have initially shipped with two batteries in parallel. One had been removed before I became her owner.

She'd always had a slow startup (several revs before ignition), and after months of trial and error, it was found that the Australia-spec Prado 90 series starter motor was to blame, as it was throwing EMF interference into nearby sensors, effecting Spill Valve operation. CRAZY.

We fitted a Jap-spec Prado 90 series starter - twice as large, twice as heavy. Did the trick, cleaned-up the interference. Perhaps the factory starter had carked it and someone had innocently-enough ordered fitted what they assumed to be the correct unit.

I've never found this information in a forum, so here it is.

For the record, I've been running off a single N70ZZ without issue, but then I'm in the sub-tropics. Not much chance of my engine freezing over any time soon.
